List of things you can’t do while black

Anonymous
Personal experience from when I was 13 at a mall in Long Island. I'm 37 now, BTW. My cousin and I, she's Puerto Rican and Black and I'm White and Black, were detained and questioned by police at an Asian beauty supply store bc apparently the store owner told police we were putting stuff in our pockets. We were damn near strip searched and subsequently released when police found nothing.

Fundraise for your school in a white neighborhood.

The thread calls for a "list". There are a few words before the link to cue you in on the issue. Read the link.

I think this is one of the worst, if not the worst, of these 'existing while black' scenarios. Thank goodness none of the actions of the officer or security guard cost this young man his life.

I am shocked they would arrest a man walking right outside of a hospital wearing a hospital gown with an IV in his arm and accuse him of stealing medical equipment. Absolutely ridiculous!

Despicable actions taken by American Airlines.

It's very obvious that a lot of people don't care for black people in this country.

If it was a skinny blonde wearing that exact same outfit, they probably would have upgraded her to first class!

Weird how at least three of the examples above happened to black doctors. It shows that no matter how educated or high up in SES status, black people still get harassed on a daily basis in this country.

So I pulled out my phone and summoned an Uber, next thing I know, not more than 5 minutes later, speeding around the corner, 2 Vienna police cruisers with search lights on... someone had called the police on me and my little boy, maybe the caller, called the police because they were concerned for our safety, thought the police could help, but I doubt it since the the police came around the corner at breakneck speed in, heavy pursuit mode.

They didn't see me, as I was sitting on my friends porch, but they did see all the extra cars parked in the street, the music coming from the house, and the lights on, so they probably figured it out for themselves, that a party guest was either looking for a parking space, or leaving the party, they left fairly quickly after doing a slow drive by.

If I hadn't been sitting on my friends porch at the time, and had instead still been in my car, perhaps I too might have become another statistic. Law abiding middle aged AA mom, blasted to little bits, in front of her baby boy -- crime having the audacity to be in a neighborhood someone didn't think she should be in.

If I had been of any other race, perhaps I might have flagged down the police to ask for help, but being an AA person, I know that doing so might have cost me, and or my son our lives. So I sat quietly in the dark, on the porch, hoping that they would leave before the Uber driver showed up.

Things black people can't do -- we have to be careful when we go to certain neighborhoods, if we have car trouble we can't expect to be given the benefit of the doubt, and we can't assume the police are there to serve, protect or to help us, as doing so could end in getting you and your family roughed up, or even worse. . . shot dead.

I don’t understand how you knew they called the police on you.

You are missing the point. It’s not that she is sure that someone called the cops on her. It’s that being a black woman, at night, in a “rich” neighborhood (Vienna) made her a prime target for police scrutiny/brutality/arrest/harassment/etc.

Thank god they didn’t see her on the porch!

Perhaps you should get out of flyover country more.

Not exactly “flyover country” but black/white marriages are much more common in the south than they are in the northeast.

Can’t be in your bedroom at 2:30 am, make a move with the light in, without having a police officer shoot you dead through the window. Texas.

If you’re not safe in your own home...

Police literally stood outside her bedroom window and shot her dead. At least it’s on his body cam and policeman should be charged with murder.
