Isn't this right at the root of it, though? Middle class anxiety, and the sense that our kids might not be able to build on our successes? People are scared, because they know they wouldn't have been able to complete in a truly egalitarian system, and they worry that their kids definitely won't be able to compete without "the very best" of everything.

My position is the same it is logical to want the best for your kid. It is illogical to pursue diversity especially since in many cases higher diversity = lower quality. This may be true in big cities but small towns, it doesn’t work that way. A school with more diversity can have a better rating then a school 30miles out in the country that is 97%white.
