That kid is not trash to UVA but that kid will struggle mightily to succeed there. And UVA has more than enough applicants who love their sport, work part-time, take 5 APs junior & senior years, and are in the top 5-10% of their class. |
That kid will do great at JMU or CNU, just not UVa. |
Well...I guess we'll never know, will we? |
| Being tax paying resident of VA doesn’t mean you are owed an acceptance to UVA. Your tax dollars are supporting many other state schools as well, and one of them will be a good fit and take your kid, even if it’s not UVA. |
THIS! |
Yikes. There are so many Virginia state schools - we are so fortunate in Virginia to have so many options. And they all have very different admissions criteria. I don't believe UVA thinks any students are "trash," but they do know which kids are more likely to succeed at the school based on their past performance and preparation. Also, every kid does have a shot at being accepted - everyone is welcome to apply to any school. |
| Related Q: would you submit scores for a 1400 SAT in-state kid (from NOVA) or go select test optional? Not URM, no hook, one parent went to UVA (so answering the supplemental Q). Meets this threads academic rigor requirement with APs in all 5 areas (4s or 5s on APs taken to date). |
Looking back at the actual post...no one said their kid was owed an acceptance. |
If that kid is so desirous of attending UVA but unwilling to put in the necessary effort in HS, they can go to their community college for two years, get good grades and apply as a transfer student. |
You're missing the point. Why is this crazy criteria the necessary effort for UVA? As previously noted, there are elite colleges (i.e., MIT) that have more reasonable admissions criteria. I'm not sure what UVA is trying to prove by being so sadistic. And I find it hard to believe that you can only be successful at UVA if you practically kill yourself with academics in high school. |
| If UVA is this full of rigor box-checking strivers, I'm glad my OOS kid wasn't interested. However, I realize that isn't accurate, as many many students at UVA did not, in fact, have top rigor in all 5 subjects, as several posts early in the thread attest to. |
There are more than 30 public institutions of higher learning in VA. There is something for everyone. Not every Californian gets to go to UCLA or Berkekey nor are they "trash" to them |
+1 |
All of the top schools want to see resumes like this. UVA has become one of them at 24 in the nation and top 3/4 of all the publics. My kid applied there and to elite slacs and ivies. They all want to see these qualities: have taken the most difficult courses offered; taken four tears of foreign language, top scores, top ECs, ranked high in the class. They all do |
MIT is private with a hige admissions office to process applications and can do what it wants and doesn't publish the criteria as UVA but wants the very top students too! UVA is public with a limited admussions office and still processes 50k applications a year. It needs to be more transparent because it is a public and reports to SCHEV. Virginua schools are very transparent which is much better than UCLA's "who the hell knows". and there arenany other options to public in VA. There is only ine MIT. apples and oranges. UVA has a public mission |
