Congrats.
Was it for this year’s admissions?

Ok… but if he got into Stanford he clearly isn’t the typical kid applying with good test scores, a non profit he created and captain of the soccer team coming as a non URM from Fairfax- what’s the real story.

Can you explain the exceptions, then? How is engineering admissions different from A&S?

It was an attempt at a humble brag, nothing else.

Isn't it obvious that you need top math and science for engineering? UVA engineering doesn't have a language requirement, so they are probably more relaxed about that in admissions.

To summarize, take at least a rigorous AP in each core subject, to include WL, plus a few more. GPA 4.4 + (for NoVA publics), SAT at least 1400. Have a few good ECs that show leadership and hope for the best.

Do not be surprised if your kid does not get in without that AP World Language. Taking that course just improves their chances of getting in.

My kid is a second year. Many of her friends are “suffering” through Spanish, since they either did not take AP Span in high school, or they did not score high enough on the AP exam. Getting a 5 gave my kid six WL credits.

I graduated from UVA SEAS.

Every SEAS student I knew had taken 4 yrs of a modern foreign language - except for one kid from SW VA coal country. His HS only offered 3 years of French. Is i4 yrs MFL an absolute requirement? Maybe not, but it certainly is very very common for matriculated SEAS undergrads.

Yes, my engineering student took through Spanish 4 but not AP. The point isn’t that there are kids in engineering that took 4+ years of language, it’s that there are some that do not.

The ONLY exception I know of in 4 years at UVa SEAS took all 3 years available at his HS in SW VA coal country. His HS was in a deprived area so there was no 4th year available.

If there is a MFL exception from NoVA, it almost certainly will be from a school which does not offer 4 years of MFL -- or for a student with a unique circumstance (e.g., military or foreign service kid with no way to get to 4 years of MFL due to family which had been detailed overseas).

Why do you insist on this? It is not true.

It was definitely true in my DC's experience. There will always be exceptions, but that's the guideline
