Why was article deleted? |
The article was terrifying. I think that child is beyond being ‘cured’ because he seems to be a determined sociopath — some of the time, the die is cast by genetic expression. He threatened prior teachers. He brought in ammo. He is fuqing violent and has been for a long, long, time.
I have an 8 year old and have met some messed-up kids that we were unlucky enough to encounter at our large public elementary. I go with the nonsense idea that all children can be made into good people, regardless of having indifferent or abusive parents, and the wiring towards antisocial or intractable to treatment psychological conditions. The truth is, the kids who present like this should be counseled out of general ed and placed or warehoused into special schools with extra security. Blessings to that teacher. She escorted her non-psychotic first graders to safety while suffering a critical chest wound. Shame forever on those parents. |
Please remember that most mentally ill children and adults are not violent. My son has psychosis but you would never know it.
I'm a teacher and we've had students like this at my school nearly every year. I hope all of the details come out about what the teacher tried to do that led up to the shooting. I hope there is a paper/email trail a mile long about this student. I also hope the parents are charged. If the gun was actually locked, how did the kid get it and bring it to school to shoot someone? Come on! |
It is horrifying to think of a child who strangled a teacher at 5 and shot a teacher at 6 and what may lie in his future.
Other tiny children should never have been in the vicinity of someone so dangerous and their safety and that of the teacher(s) and staff should have been a paramount consideration. |
Because it’s a copyright violation to post the whole thing. |
Although "most" aren't violent, many are volatile and very aggressive, when not taking meds and/or placed in settings that cause them to experience high levels of stress. Can also be true for ASD students. In too many of our public schools, these students are not receiving needed supports and are not placed in appropriate settings. |
One of my former students was very out of control. She had tried to cut other students with scissors, hit/punch/kick whatever adult tried to stop her from eloping or hurting other people, etc. Her mother refused mental health services because she was "fine at home." Long story short, there isn't a lot that can be done without parental consent. I felt so bad for this child who was struggling so much. She transferred and I still wonder how she is. We need a lot more mental health counseling and sometimes students just need to be removed for everyone's safety even if the parent doesn't agree. |
Jesus. What do you do with a child like this? Is this nature? Is the child doomed to be a psychopath? Did the parents cause this? Why haven’t the parents’ identity been released? Shouldn’t they be charged like the parents of the Michigan shooter? I get the shooter is a minor, but I don’t like that the parents aren’t facing consequences for allowing their psycho kid to access a gun.
What can we as parents do to keep these dangerous kids away from our own children. If this continues then those who can afford it will leave for private schools since privates can choose who to admit. |
As a society we don't want to admit that some people are born bad eggs. Maybe they'll wait until they're in their teens or young adulthood before they do something dangerous, or maybe if the conditions are ripe they'll harm others much earlier, like this kid. We want to think that every child is special and can be saved, but it's a false premise. I don't know what the answer is, but we need some kind of universal testing and plan for kids who don't meet the requirements to safely interact with others. |
Parentalal consent should end when a child has maliciously injured or attempted to maliciously injure another child or adult. It should be the LAW. |
VOTE for candidates who will do something about it instead of continually sweeping these issues under the rug. Wake up, people! I work at a school. We had a student like this for an entire year. Untold psychological damage he did to fellow students who had to evacuate the classroom daily not to mention physical injury to teachers. |
I actually don’t think there are candidates who will do anything about it |
It would have to be Federal candidates because that is the law effecting local school systems. |
Fully funding IDEA and increasing sped pay/ratios would be a good first step |
