God that would be a treat! |
Agreed on hospitalizations, which should matter a lot more than cases at this point. With the vaccine roll-out steadily increasing, the severity/impact of the cases should continue to drop quickly, even if the case numbers themselves don't drop as fast. National hospitalizations are down to ~107k, down from a peak of over 132k (on Jan 6th): https://covidtracking.com/data/national |
I know this has been discussed in various formats, but this kind of news can't get enough airtime.
"Pfizer Inc and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine appeared to lose only a small bit of effectiveness against an engineered virus with three key mutations from the new coronavirus variant found in South Africa, according to a laboratory study conducted by the U.S. drugmaker. The study by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), which has not yet been peer-reviewed, showed a less than two-fold reduction in antibody titer levels, indicating the vaccine would likely be effective in neutralizing a virus with the so-called E484K and N501Y mutations found in the South African variant." https://www.yahoo.com/news/pfizer-vaccine-only-slightly-less-234133165.html |
Thank you for the clip of Dr. Jha! I follow him on Twitter, he seems very realistic and pragmatic, and to hear him say what he did on Morning Joe has made my day!
|
You're welcome! I love watching him on CNN. Yesterday he said we need to do 2 million vaccines a day which is doable. |
This is great to hear, hospitalizations rates dropping is really tremendous news. Thanks for sharing! |
Another winner. A local company makes good.
"Novavax Inc said on Thursday its coronavirus vaccine was 89.3% effective in preventing COVID-19 in a trial conducted in the United Kingdom, and was nearly as effective in protecting against the more highly contagious variant first discovered in the UK, according to a preliminary analysis. The study took place as the more easily transmissible UK variant was circulating, and the preliminary analysis suggests the vaccine was 85.6% effective against this mutation, the U.S. company announced in a news release. It did not provide the study data." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/novavax-says-vaccine-89-3-210621974.html |
Saw news today that cases are down 35% and hospitalizations are also down. Hope this is the trend that stays with us 🙏🏻

Wool woop!! Go Gaithersburg!! Key take home - 89.3% was against the UK strain. Against the original covid strain, it was 96% efficacious!! Unfortunately, for the SA variant, it’s in the 50% range. Still, great news!’ |
Sorry, misspoke ^^^
85.6% against UK strain 95.6% against original strain 60% against SA strain Overall, it’s 89.3% |
Oh gosh, I’d forgotten about MD’s own Novavax. Great news! I wonder how close they are to concluding studies in the US and applying for EUA? |

Weird - Erin Burnett on CNN was saying Novavax had “plunging effectiveness” against new strain. But that’s not what I’m reading here, in these links. |
Same. I've forgotten what hugs feel like. |
I saw it tonight. Terrible reporting considering how good the results were. |
