Barney Fife speaking out of turn with no authority trying to justify his trip to DR on Loudoun County taxpayer $$.

Why would the loudon county police be involved at all? Sounds like doge needs to take a look?

Why would she have drowned after being saved from a scary situation like that? It seems very unlikely she just went back into the water. It still seems so fishy to me. I am basing this on direct quotes from him.

You’re not paying attention to the details. He got them to safety in knee-deep water. Then he started puking. Once he was done puking, he said he didn’t see her and figured she walked up back to her room. Every summer even in Ocean City, there’s a drowning and often it’s a knee deep water. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that another wave knocked her over, especially in her inebriated state. You are thinking about this from the perspective of a sober person and try to think about it from the perspective of two very inebriated individuals. Their decision-making often does not make sense.

If she drowned in knee deep water (totally possible I agree) where is the body? It would still be there. It’s like some of you have never actually been in the ocean.

No one said her literal time of death was in the deep water, it’s obvious to anyone who has been in the ocean that she could’ve been knocked down by another wave or pulled out by a riptide while in knee-deep water.

+1 A lot of posters here don't understand about ocean waters---quick moving, unexpected riptides and also the prevalence of sharks.

Y'all make DR sound VERY appealing! I've never heard of a rip tide or a shark dragging an adult human out to sea from 12 inches of water.

you are ignorant about rip tides and red flag warnings.

Not as ignorant as Joshua and Sudiksha apparently.

The victim's family legally reside and pay taxes there.

This is really crass. But the victim and the guy were college students on spring break and had been drinking. No excuse for pp, a supposed adult, safely behind a keyboard feigning ignorance of the deadly force of treacherous ocean water. Absolutely no excuse for such ignorance.

I don’t understand why the sheriff was involved either. I assume it was at the request of the woman’s parents. Two sheriffs deputies were sent to DR to interview Riibe and investigate and they quickly cleared him and concluded it was accident/likely drowning. The sheriff publicly said this, and even sent a letter to the DA in the DR, and gave one to Riibe’s attorney who tried to present it in the hearing over the screaming objection of the DA who claimed it was unreliable and irrelevant because it was coming from the US.

So what? This happened in another country where he has absolutely no jurisdiction.

It was always bizarre that Barney Fife went. He must have needed a vacation.

We should increase the drinking age to 25.

It’s not normal to send local police to a different country, especially when the FBI is already there. I’m sure he had valuable wisdom to share.

"We" don't control the drinking age in other countries. Or any of the other laws there.

Is it typical for a local LE to go to another country in situations like this?

No. Not at all.

Or lower it at least for beer to 18.
Crazy that you can get an automatic weapon sooner than a beer.

Someone should FOIA how much Barney’s little boondoggle cost Loudoun County taxpayers.

The better question is why he inserted himself where he had no jurisdiction. I am not shocked Chapman labeled this guy a "person of interest."

But could they go if *someone* pays for their ticket and lodging? Just as an example and not saying this has happened in this case and honestly haven't ever heard of it happening, but what if a church group were to hire their local LE to go check on things somewhere that's not in US if members of their church were in situation or in an incident involving them? Could a Barney level person do that as a private officer or if they go would they be doing so as a LE rep from U.S.?
