E. L. Haynes v. Yu Ying

Anonymous
Good morning, all--Both our 3 year old and 4 year old have been accepted into E.L. Haynes. The 4 year old also got into Yu Ying. We have to make a decision this week.

I know there are countless threads re. each school, but in comparing the two, which do you prefer? Thanks in advance

go haynes because it doesn't sound like Chinese is your passion. It really should be the foremost reason you choose YY.

Thanks, 8:41. We have toured both schools. We're walking distance to E.L. Haynes and that is a factor.

Walking distance to Haynes and both kids can go? Seems like a no-brainer to me unless you are gung-ho for Mandarin.

you don't have to be gung ho for Mandarin. People just want your spot. I would go there so your child can go all the way through High School. I would not pick Haynes over Yu Ying.

I'm already in at YY, so I don't need her spot. Doesn't Haynes go all the way through high school? Or middle at least? I would love to be able to walk to a good school - that would be priceless to us.hjnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

YY Parent here. I agree with this poster. We applied to both Haynes and YY at the time my child was entering PK. If we had received the call from Haynes, DC would be at Haynes. We support his Mandarin education as much as we support all of DCs educational needs, but we are not gung-ho about Mandarin. DC is receiving a good Mandarin education at YY despite his family's lack of ability to provide support beyond the school resources and tutor.

On the upside, the family has planned to take minimumly two trips to China before DC reaches the eighth grade. Two trips to China prior to life at YY were not on the family's bucket list of travel locations.

would you pick haynes over Yu Ying if it was in walking distance?

I toured Haynes at the relevant time and was very impressed. But as a YY parent who really really wants his kids to learn Chinese, there wouldn't be a choice. Sounds to me like that's not true for you and Haynes might be a better fit.

Hmm, your assumption is that every child at a DCI feeder school will actually attend DCI. Believe me, there are children from all the feeder schools who will apply to the privates, SWW, Basis, and Banneker. If OP wants the option of a PK-12, I believe Haynes offers MS and HS.

Of course, one option would be to send them to both schools. You get to try out both for one year and then you have sibling preference for the other for whichever one you like better. On the other hand, that one year would be Mandarin only for your 4YO.

not at all what any sane person would do. you're short-changing everyone: the kids, the school/parent community, and chances for those who really want in to get a spot in PreK4. sounds like the most selfish move to me

I am the "no-brainer" poster. Actually, this is a very tempting scenario, if it's easy to get the little one to Haynes and the trip to YY isn't a nightmare.
