The post didn't necessarily say that they needed to decide whether to enroll in YY this week Maybe OP submitted their enrollement for YY already, and needs to make a decision this week for El Haynes because those forms are due this week? Have no idea though, just guessing. |
But you're claiming to have been offered a spot from a school (YY) which is meticulous about following a certain process, which includes removing a child's name from the waitlist when they are offering a spot. No names have moved since the last round of offers. So OP, when did you get your offer, and why hasn't the waitlist moved? |
This year would be the second year of comparing test results. The first year YY administered the test the scores were not counted or considered by the charter board. |

In 2011, 77% of E.L. Haynes students scored proficient or advanced in math and 64% scored proficient or advanced in reading on the DC-CAS, outpacing DC Public and Public Charter Schools' scores of 43% in math and 44% in reading. E.L. Haynes students also outscored DC Public and Public Charter Schools in the percentage of students scoring advanced. 8th Grade Students Scoring Proficient or Advanced on the 2011 DC-CAS E.L Haynes opened in 2004 serving PK-2nd graders. By 2011, those 2nd graders were 8th graders and had made extraordinary gains. Ninety (90%) scored proficient or advanced in math and 75% scored proficient or advanced in reading. In comparison, across all 8th graders enrolled in DC Public and Public Charter Schools, 54% scored proficient or advanced in math and 45% scored proficient or advanced in reading. Six-Year Gains in Proficiency on the DC-CAS E.L. Haynes has demonstrated outstanding six-year gains on the DC-CAS of 47 percentage points in math and 23 percentage points in reading, more than twice the gains in math and three times in reading than DC Public and Public Charter Schools. Statewide gains for the same period are 17 percentage points in math and 7 percentage points in reading. |

Here are the results for all the charter schools |
| Maybe OP accepted YY last week, the wait list moved then, and then got a call from Haynes this week. Get it? |
| OP here. That's EXACTLY what happened, 16:27. Thank you. |
I thought the OP said they were just offered the Haynes space. So they've enrolled at Yu Ying, and now got the Haynes offer. At this point the window to accept Haynes hasn't closed, and they haven't withdrawn their name from Yu Ying. |
| Yes, that is exactly what the OP said happened. Not sure why everyone is so eager to cry foul on every question.... |
| I really disagree with those who have recommended going with both schools, one for each child. Yes, people move their children all the time. Some kids will cope better than others with this, but it is disruptive - very, if your child takes a while to settle. There is a decision to be taken - just take it now! Going with both is just prolonging the agony. Mandarin is great, obviously, but going to a neighbourhood school is really priceless. Less time in the car, less rushing to get there on time, and a real sense of belonging to a community for your children (and you). As long as your kids have a supportive family (and it sounds like they do), the difference in test scores isn't going to mean anything. |
| OP, I would love to know what you finally decided! |
Not to mention, if she gives up the PK4 slot at Haynes for YY and then decides YY isn't a good fit, even though she'll get sibling preference for K the mext year, there's no guarantee she'll get that K slot. There may be only 1 or 2 open spaces for K and more than that many sibs wanting into K. |
|
OP, there are certainly some bullies telling what you should do. You are lucky, you have a choice. Why not try out both schools and see which one is a better fit for your.family.
Mandarin is an amazing language to learn and you were lucky to get in.......give it a go and switch next year if it is not for you. Good luck with your decision |
| Most families at YY send their prek3 to another DCPS or charter. Unless OP wants to keep her three yr old at home why is sending the 3 yr old to Haynes an issue? |
+1. Wouldn't the three year old be going somewhere anyway. They can't go to Yu Ying to begin with. |
