Any word on the new NVSL rules for the summer?

Who’s going to be policing the mask use at meets? Refs? Starter? Making sure we don’t sign up for those roles if we go against one of these annoying teams.

Wasn’t this only for off-site graduations if the venue didn’t require it?

No idea. But why so much inconsistency with rules?

I’m not sure what you mean by the part in bold. The VDH has stressed that “should” does not mean the same as “must”, but they do recommend.

The second part is up to the pool at which you are swimming. If you don’t want to sign up, don’t sign up. I have been to many NVSL pools over the past 12 years and there have been times their set up or rules are different from ours and we follow them. When I go to someone else’s house I abide by their rules.

I get it. What I’m saying is that unless it’s absolutely required, my children are not wearing masks this summer outside at the pool.

Those teams may also not allow spectators, so your choice might be to volunteer and wear a mask or stand in the parking lot and hope you get a glimpse through the fence. I know of at least two teams against whom we are swimming who have said limited or no spectators. This is not a normal summer. Better than last year but not normal.

Why? The governor lifted all distancing and capacity requirements.

Those teams have their reasons. Stores don’t have to require masks or distancing, but I’ve been in some that still do so ai follow their rules.

A pool may absolutely require it. Our pool isn’t, but I understand that others might choose a different option.

Most big stores are not requiring it and that's INSIDE.

Again, we are outside and kids have already been playing soccer, baseball, lacrosse for months plus playing together outside in the neighborhood.

So I understand that pools CAN have this requirement. I just don't understand what their reasoning is given current climate and data.

Our pool has announced that, at least for time trials this weekend, vaccinated volunteers do not need to mask but unvaccinated volunteers are encouraged to. The kids are asked to mask while hanging around on deck but can unmask to eat and when they leave the seating area to head to clerk of course. Of course, our pool deck is really small so even limiting to swimmers and volunteers (no parent spectators unless they're working the meet) doesn't really allow for social distancing. My 14 yo is absolutely fine with this; masking has never really bothered her and she still wears one to practice even though she doesn't have to, because many other swimmers (including her best friend) do.

I was just laughing about masks at swim practice last night. Our team reps have decided that kids need to wear masks to swim practice. So they wear a mask to walk over to the team area, remove their masks before getting in the pool then spend all of swim practice congregating at one of the pool or even on the deck while getting instruction all without a mask. Then they are expected to put their mask on when they gather their stuff and leave that pool deck. At which point they go to other areas of the pool without masks and interact with all their other friends at the pool. It all makes zero sense.

I have not heard what will be required at time trials, but again parents hang out all the time at the pool without mask so requiring them at time trails seems silly.

EXACTLY!!!

At some point, people in this area need to start using their brains, common sense and SCIENCE at the same time. Imagine that. Our team is maskless. So we are definitely not wearing masks for time trials. And, it's completely pointless for any other event, either, in general.

FCPS lifted mask mandate May 28 for outdoor events. So our HS graduation was outside in the football stadium. Announcements were made to follow CDC guidance for masks. If vaccinated, masks optional. If not vaccinated, masks encouraged. I would say it was 50/50 on mask use in the bleachers with no distancing. It was a happy and great day.

Swim meets can be the same.

Elementary recess is still fully masked and it’s getting to be miserable.

Hey I am a team rep and we have a similar policy - the reason, is that we know some of the pools we swim against have very different rules. Although our pool really is acting like 2019 a number of pools are not. So we keep masks on the table so when we tell everyone we will all be wearing masks it isn't a shock. I don't like it, but that is the reason. We have already heard from several teams that they will be strict on masks.

We are doing the same for the same reason - we aren't really enforcing it but we are saying it.

Seems to vary a lot pool by pool or by area. Our pool and surrounding pools are not mentioning or enforcing masks.

Will you not allow a kid to swim if they refuse to wear a mask?
