Just finished the season. I thought it was wonderful.
Charles does seem like a brat. On the one hand I’m sure it would be painful to not be with the person you love, but it seems pretty clear that if he had embraced Diana, she could’ve learned to be a really great partner. I can’t blame her for reacting the way she did to being frozen out almost immediately. The rest of the family expected her to conform to her misery because they conformed to theirs, but that doesn’t make their reaction natural. The one person i think is possibly worse than Charles, though, is the Queen Mother. What a bitch. Honestly. The Queen herself comes out of all the seasons looking, on balance, pretty good, IMO. |
One of the overarching themes of this whole series is that while it would seem that the Queen should be able to do whatever the eff she wants, she seems to be constantly thwarted. |

Charles hated Diana because she was more popular than he was and thus overshadowed him, much like his mother did. Camilla is hated by the people and will never be a threat to Charles' fragile ego.
Charles will make a terrible King IMO. He's a wet noodle and out of touch. I wish the monarchy would skip over him and make William king. |
never gonna happen. also Camilla is generally quite well liked nowadays. She has been a good step mum to the Princes and they have publicly said so (sorry I don't have a link!) |
In the show, yes, she comes across as a complete emotional tyrant. However, she was adored by the public and no one ever got any sense of the person behind the crown. She just turned up and smiled, beatifically. |
This. Remember, I think it was last season(?), when JFK and Jackie were featured doing their European tour? While making a speech at dinner one night he introduced himself as “the man that escorted Jaqueline Kennedy to France”, or something to that effect. It was a great, classy line showing that even though he was President he could make a joke at his own expense. Charles, apparently, could never do something like that. He’s a boar. |
exactly. but he was also raised to think he was going to grow up to be THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON in the country. And that was not reflected in his lack of popularity, then or now. |
I didn't know the Queen Mother was adored by the public..I always thought she was a bitch. Charles I don't like...he always seemed callous and selfish...this season is not helping him. Who says "whatever love means" with their new fiance right there? |
Based on what, exactly? There is nothing on her. Smiling photos, that's it. |

Think from my UK granny...I honestly don’t remember. |

I just finished season 4, and I was really struck by a musical motif that popped up repeatedly, usually in scenes with Diana. It's this groaning, chant-like humming of male voices. To me, it sounds ancient and almost unearthly and kind of made my hair stand on end. Did anyone else notice this?
It's the same vocal interval repeated. I'm not super strong on my musical intervals and pitch, but I think it's a descending perfect fourth, which in the case of Diana could be interesting because it would be the opposite of the interval that begins the wedding march, an ascending perfect fourth. It would fit with her naive notion that she was living a fairytale coming into direct conflict with the reality of what she married into. But there's this inevitability to it, a doomlike quality, that seems bigger. |
was it a madrigal? |
Can you give a specific example (actual scene)? This is not something I noticed at all, but I am tone deaf and not musically educated at all. |
