Where are your kids Getting in?

Doesn't matter - his or her GPA and scores aren't high enough to get into UVA - not even for the bottom quarter of the incoming class

Pronounced lack of qualifications to even apply to UVA...

Lovely.

My UVA unqualified kid (4.0 wGPA, 1480/34) is trying to decide between UMD (with $12K) and JMU. For his major, the $60K price difference is probably not worth it (esp. with grad school in the picture) so JMU is likely to be the one unless he gets off a waitlist from his top choice.

PPs will be happy to know that he didn't apply to UVA or W&M with his sub-bottom quartile qualifications!

Congrats to your kid! This is exciting for me as I also have DCPS public kid who will have a similar profile (no diversity, good GPA, tests very well (took SSAT last year). With some luck and some SAT prep it's encouraging to know that we may be ok.
Also, I went to CWRU but would be thrilled with Carleton.

That is very important information for the PP to have, and you must be an extremely kind person.

No, the unkind person is the one who screams BLEEECH over these pages after a tour when they realize their child doesn't have the stats to get into UVA or W&M. Insulting the 30,000 undergrads and grad students at UVA because one doesn't have the stats with a BLEECH is childish and totally unnecessary.

You are mentally unhinged if you think that you need to defend UVA over that statement. Good lord, let it go.

Not a scream simply conveying the observation of a teenager...

Campus visit was between junior and senior year...so this
"bleeeeccchh" had nothing to do with tests and GPAs (DC hadn't even taken the SAT/ACT yet), she simply didn't like the campus and the attitude of the people she interacted with.

...and responses like those in this chain seem to bear out her reaction.

...correction between sophomore and junior year.... (my non-UVa alum memory isn't up to this...)

Congrats - I have a DC kid headed to Carleton next fall too, admitted RD. Similar stats except good extracurriculars (no sports).

DS in at UNC Chapel Hill EA OOS
Villanova EA
William & Mary OOS postcard then offered Monroe Honors with research stipend
Loyola of MD 120K scholarship
University of Notre Dame
Boston College
UVA OOS

rejected - Hopkins

1530 SAT, 10AP's (A's in all), GPA is 4.3 weighted (though his school does not give crazy weight to honors and AP's),
3 varsity sports, Student Gov and other leadership, school ambassador etc...., outside internships......
Catholic School - Maryland - no not a fancy big name one
NO hooks like URM or first gen or anything really..

waiting for UPenn, Duke and something else, can't remember.

Whole process has been interesting/yet grueling for the kiddo and parents.

Feel totally blown away and blessed but how to decide????

Not to derail, but I just read that Carleton has a really neat masters program in business analytics/data science. My DS is younger, but I'm following this thread with interest. DS is interested in business concepts but really enjoys math-- it seems like a cool program for kids who share the same mindset.

Are we talking about the same place? I'm talking about Carleton College in Northfield, MN. I don't think they have any graduate programs.
