I can't find where I originally saw it clearly spelled out but unless I am totally mistaken, and I don't think I am, there is no cap on economic damages (I.e if you can prove you suffered $1 million in economic damages you can get that) but for non- economic damages, including medical malpractice and WRONGFUL DEATH, the cap is right now, since 2014, $300k period, full stop.

As much as these poor people don't want or care about the money, they won't be able to obliterate the Schlitterbahn corp. at $300k; which, I would think, would be part of their plan.

Maybe they will be able to affect some sort of change in the corporation's policies or regulation of water parks and rides.

The money doesn't matter. I lost my youngest son in a fatal accident where damages were awarded to us. That money is blood money and Ive never spent a dime (other than paying our lawyer). I throw away the statement every month before even opening the envelope. Its an amount that could significantly change our lifestyle and I have no interest in a penny of it. What I want is my child. What these parents want isn't money. It annoys me that pages upon pages keep bringing up how much money they should be able to get, will be able to get, etc etc. I would spend the rest of my life working min wage jobs in the worst conditions imaginable if it meant all my children were living.

I'm sorry for your loss. In fairness, I don't think anyone was suggesting that these parents are looking to break the bank or profit off of their son's death. People are suggesting that the corporation should have to pay a sufficient amount to punish it for its negligence and motivate it to make a change.

When my SIL was a young woman she saw a person be smeared into paste by a rolling tank in the middle of the street in winter--she said because it was below 0, no one came outside to do anything to help for a horribly long time. There was nothing that could be done.

my sister witnessed a fatal farming machine accident that was very gruesome. it basically ruined her for forever. she literally can't sleep...ever. a few people lost their life that day, trust me.

Ugh this is so tragic. It makes my stomach churn reading the details that have come out- and not very much have. Just that he was decapitated and they saw blood coming down then the body. Was his head still attached? Horrifying... Can't imagine seeing that.

I don't know, it is a very sad story and I understand why it is newsworthy, but I really feel that it was wrong to show the photos of the slide with bloody water and the separate tarps covering his body and head. I understand that it is important for people to know about what happened, and the underlying issues about safety that it exposes, but I feel as though that photo violated this young man's dignity. I wouldn't want people looking at a photo like that of me if I died in the way that this young man did. I just feel as thought is was wrong to put that out there.

I am OP of the ama thread. For whatever reason, the media is trying to make it look like a huge crowd today, but I think it was pretty small. I heard three people interviewed and they all said they were using tix that were purchased before the accident. Still, I can't imagine going to that park again.

I know this is really gruesome but .......but the picture with the supposed 2 tarps is unclear and really they just look waded up /discarded so I think they show nothing really ....did his head actually come off or was it just an internal injury.
