If you went to a school in a foreign country and were giving it money and participating in student-government activists, you’d probably feel it’s ok to write an op ed in the school’s paper to request it take a stance on a topic about which you are passionate about. After all, you aren’t participating in a protest. You aren’t advocating for a government action. Your free speech right was encouraged by the university even.

Most people don't think she only wrote an op-ed.

Since when do you care about what “most people” think?

The only people whose opinions matter are ICE initially and an immigration judge secondarily. ICE bases their activity on information they have, and the judge decides if it's sufficient to support the proposed deportation. Nobody else gets a vote in the process.

Obviously, don't provide ammunition to ICE if you want to stay here and are not a citizen.

I was just detained by and my dog was assaulted by plainclothed ICE agents, along with undercover members of the NYPD I believe; while trying to intervene in an ICE abduction on my block. They refused to identify themselves, were masked, produced no signed warrant, and they were in an unmarked van. They literally snatched a family walking their kids home from school off the street, and then kicked my dog and cuffed me and my neighbors for asking questions. They illegally went through my phone, violated multiple Constitutional rights, and then sped off with a family and screaming kids in the back of a van to God knows where. If this can happen on a corner in Harlem at 5:30 in the afternoon, we are in big trouble guys. Protect yourselves and your neighbors anyway you know how. I am absolutely heartbroken, enraged, and disgusted at what my country has become and if you aren’t also; you either aren’t paying attention or you are part of the problem. EDITED TO ADD: Since this is getting shared around I thought I’d make abundantly clear my takeaway from this experience. It’s this: Black and brown people in this country have been subjected to this same type of violence and lawlessness for centuries; with often far worse outcomes than I experienced. The fact the oppressors in power are now willing to also inflict it against a white man of privilege in broad daylight, in the supposed bastion of progressive values that is NYC; only shows how brazen they have become and how dangerous it must be for everyone else not as privileged as I. White people MUST stand in the way of fascism at every turn. We MUST put our bodies and privilege on the line. We MUST be wrenches in the cogs of this horrible machine we helped create. We don’t have much time left.
*Also videos of the incident are incoming! I got nothing of substance before losing possession of my phone, but I know some neighbors did.

Oh and I should mention all this happened while being an American citizen who had committed no crime whatsoever in that instance. I was told “you are being detained as part of an ICE investigation” and had my phone grabbed out of my hand and cuffs thrown on, despite being an American born U.S. citizen and no probable cause of a crime committed.

Did I ask tough questions? Yes, but that’s not illegal. Was I nice to them? No, but that’s not illegal either. And for the record, my dog is the least aggressive to humans dog I’ve ever met, but any dog would get upset with kids crying and masked men yelling. If this can happen to an American citizen simply trying to standup for his neighbors, all the rules and laws are out the window.

Well, it seems a judge has just weighed in. Let's see what happens.

"A federal judge in Boston ordered that the Trump administration cannot deport a Tufts graduate student detained by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, NBC 10 Boston reported Friday evening. Before any decisions are made, the judge said Rumeysa Ozturk cannot be deported until that same judge has decided if she was lawfully arrested, WCVB-TV also reported Friday."

I've been posting news updates and will continue to do so as long as the case is active. I agree with you about not engaging with the nutters, but I hope that those who are sincerely interested in the issue will keep the thread going as new information comes out.

Source? To date, the government has not provided any specific details of what she has done to merit being abducted and eventually deported. Even Canary Mission, the pro-Israel site that tracks critics of Israel, simply cites her op-ed as her "anti-Israel activism" without providing any evidence of ties to Hamas or illegal activity. She's got the ACLU representing her now, so I'm hopeful they will get more information.

What most people think is irrelevant. What kind of idiotic comment is this? So if most people say you committed a crime your behind should be arrested? If you have clear evidence show it or stfu. Good thing a federal judge just blocked her deportation.

This is the part I don’t understand. The way it’s been handled makes no sense.

That's what they are doing with 530,000 people who had their parole revoked. They sent notices that they must leave the country or they will be detained.

Evidently the biggest voice of all belongs to a cloaked entity that engages in un-American activities at the direction of a foreign state and its malignant supporters here and abroad. Who knew?!

What can we do to help her? Lots of nice words, but no actions to take?

She has no future in the U.S. Even if immigration court stops her deportation, she has no pathway to legal status here. She will never get a H1B visa, she will never get a green card let alone citizenship. If her deportation is stopped she will live as a person in limbo in the U.S. if that’s her choice instead of returning to Turkey each to their own.

How is this irrelevant? She was a PhD student or postdoctoral student trying to get an education she can’t get in her home country.
That might be an unfamiliar concept to you - that someone would emigrate just to get a better education and not to try to become a US citizen.

Look up the Canary Mission - they have provided a list of people they want Trump to deport or imprison. This woman was on their hit list for writing an op-Ed in the student newspaper.
