That's not even getting into the whole issue of the reliability of police crash investigations. The people on the Metropolitan PD are law enforcement officers, not professional crash investigators. The MPD is not the National Transportation Safety Board.

What we do know is, the higher the speed of the car, the more likely the crash will be fatal. That's just basic physics.

Among the many sad things about you is that you still don’t understand - or at least don’t want to admit that you understand - that there is absolutely nothing in the tabulation you have presented to suggest that these people were killed by drivers who were obeying the speed limit. Just because someone tagged another cause as predominant - using whatever hierarchy they choose to use - does not mean that the driver was not speeding. This is so elementary that it pains me to have to explain it you.


And to add to that, we know from basic physics and decades of crash studies that the probability of death rises exponentially with speed. So, while the predominant reason for the crash may be determined to be another factor, the predominant reason for the death will almost always be speed. A drunk driver who runs a stop sign at 10mph may cause a crash, but most likely not a fatal one. Any driver that runs into a pedestrian at 35mph, on the other hand, has a better than even chance of killing them.


This is some tortured logic. This is like saying that if there's a car accident and a person died, the predominant reason for their death is that they chose to leave their house that day and they should have just stayed inside. But we get it: You want to blame speeding in all cases, regardless of what details of what actually happened.


I applaud you for fighting the good fight but you're never going to win on this board. The goal of posters on here (as they state) is for there to be a 10 mph speed limit everywhere. But then when people still die, they'll want cars banned entirely. I think the folks on here are the type that get in the left lane on I-95 and go 45 mph, and thereby cause major backups and a dangerous situation as everyone tries to manuveur around them, but are so proud of how virtuous they are by going under the speed limit.

If only we had some real life examples where these projects have already happened. Then we could simply look at the data and see whether or not they work.

For instance. Has either Connecticut or 16th gotten safer since 2021? Has traffic on the side streets around them increased since 2021? Have those side streets gotten safer? How have congestion patterns changed?

We have at least two examples with three years of history. What has happened?

The car passed across Georgia and then struck the child on Kennedy. Again, on Kennedy. WASHINGTON — The mother of four-year-old Zy'aire Joshua is pleading for safety upgrades after her son was hit and killed by a car Thursday afternoon near the corner of Georgia Avenue and Kennedy Street Northwest just before 3:30 p.m.

D.C. Police said the four-year-old was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit.

Zy'aire's mom, Shaquan Smith, said the walk sign had turned on, indicating it was safe for pedestrians to cross. Smith said she was walking across the street with her new baby in the stroller, five-year-old at one side, when she watched in horror as the car hit Zy'aire and dragged him down the street.

WUSA9 reached out to D.C. Police about what the mother had told our station, but they did not provide further specifics about why its department said about the child reportedly crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk.


Zy'aire's uncle, Donald, said he has a five-year-old son that used to play with Zy'aire all the time. So, when he heard the news about his nephew, his heart shattered.

“That could have been my son. It could have been anyone else’s kid," Joshua said. "Georgia Avenue, people been speeding through there for years, just not paying attention to kids.”

Both he and his sister are frustrated that more safety changes weren't installed along Georgia Ave. before Zy'aire's death.

“They need to do something about that speeding and put some cameras and speed bumps so this doesn’t happen to another child," Smith said. "These are innocent kids who are only four or three years old and have a whole life ahead of him."

Her brother, Donald, is pleading for the government to take action now.

"Please do something about it, we're begging you," he said. "We don’t want to see another mother, another family, grieving over a child passing because of someone speeding on their street.”
