"Don't Text Me So Early!"

Anonymous wrote:The people who are saying "don't text before 8am". do you have a job? I don't want to deal with personal texts during my work day. I would rather receive them early or late, I respond when I'm available, that's why it's texting, not calling.

I don’t believe those folks actually have friends either. If I am on a friend’s mind, I love knowing it.

But the flip side of that coin is that she just could have scheduled her text to send at 9. That's just as easy, and takes the burden off the recipient.

Burden on the recipient?! Jesus just set your own settings. Are you this high maintenance in other areas of your life?

Be in charge of your own time.

Would you text your boss at 5:00 am and insist that he/she is wrong to be annoyed if you woke them up? Of course, you wouldn't!! You reserve this kind of entitled behavior for family and friends.

Yes I would and I have, because my boss is not a princess.

If you have a phone, I expect you to know how to use basic functions.

But what if your boss came to you and said "please don't text me at 5:00 am again. We are sleeping during that time and you woke is up." I'm SURE you would tell her right away how stupid and incompetent she is. Righ? RIGHHHHTTT?

DP - I wouldn’t tell my boss they were incompetent to his face, no. But I would laugh at him with all my coworkers. Kind of like this thread.

I can see you are a person of high integrity and morals. We should all aspire to be like you.

Yes I have a full time job, three children 8 and under and I am on my local school board. I have basically no free time to myself, but I do sleep until 7:30 every morning because I have a supportive family that helps make that happen and it ruins my entire day when someone decides to start blowing up my phone at 7am. They are primarily from two friends who KNOW I don't like being texted that early but who do it anyway. I have decided it is not worth being a THING in the friendship about but it bugs the ever loving crap out of me and effects my ENTIRE day. You can decide you don't give a crap about doing this to people you theoretically like enough to be texting at 7am but that doesn't change the reality.

That feature does not exist.

Exactly! This feature exists for email, but not for text, and it's for a reason. I am not calendaring time into my calendar so I can send "time-appropriate" texts. What about friends who live in different time zones? I have friends on the west coast and they text me well after my bedtime. Am I suppose to reply "don't text after my bedtime!" Sounds like your SIL is easily overwhelmed and has trouble managing the multiple facets of life.

Then I would come on here and rant about my utterly inept and moron of a boss and continue to text her while looking for a job with a competent boss.

Seriously pp, this a losing game. Learn how to manage your notifications.

Yes, you certainly sound like a person with “integrity.” I’m guessing someone texted you too early and your phone wasn’t silenced. Hope you figure it all out and get to sleep early tonight.

Sure, you'd look for another job because your boss told you not to wake her up at 5:00 but it's a losing game for me. Good lord! I wonder how some of you have made it to adulthood.

I can’t believe the nasty bickering over this. Just keep doing your own thing and agree to disagree. You aren’t changing any minds when things get this heated over something trivial.

I am team SIL but have friends who do this who I don't confront IRL. I think these type of discussions devolve like this when you stumble onto something that a lot of people do without thinking and a lot of people think is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING and it never occurred to the first group that whatever this is inspired such strong feelings so they lash out feeling very defensive. And then the people who found this annoying but who have kept it to themselves find themselves in an anonymous forum where they can finally unleash all the feelings they kept tamped down about this without repercussions. So everyone involved is being too intense.

“Why did you get fired?”

“Because my boss doesn’t know how to use DND.”

“Seriously? You’re hired. Thanks for knowing how to use basic phone features in the year 2024.”

Anonymous wrote:100% not you - people need to understand their phone settings and use them.

I wake up to messages from my sister (a teacher) all the time since she’s up by 5 am. Or from my SIL on the west coast texting late. I have my texts on silent 24 hours a day. I leave my ringer on so I’ll catch any emergencies.

On that note, phone calls before 8 AM *are* rude. Texts are not.

Thank you. I came here to post the same thing only with my family back in the UK. Reading this for 6 pages and not one person mentioning time zones tells me this is a xenophobic old lady group. Good God.

Silence your phone grandma, or simply learn how to use it. The world doesnt revolve around you. What's next? Telling people they need t send a polite text asking if it’s ok to text???

When I’m texting people in different time zones I’m respectful of what time it is there, because the world doesn’t revolve around me. Take your own advice!

You don’t have friends and family thoughout the world and it shows.

That’s not the gotcha you wished it was.

It’s not a gotcha, it’s an explanation. It explains why you are so small minded here.

How do you know where the relatives of the person you responded to live? You know her and all her friends and family?

Because literally *no one* who has family who lives on a different continent objects to when they text. She claims to only text during certain acceptable hours. That would really affect communication if the person’s family lived in different parts of the world.

You obviously don’t have relatives or family on other continents, otherwise you and them would have reason to know the time difference.
You have google, look up Webster’s dictionary for the word literally.

Is texting the only way you all know how to communicate? Texting is for immediate communication--it's like a telephone call. If you want to send a message with the expectation of a later reply, send an email.

Texting has evolved, people don't read their texts right away anymore. Maybe I'm surrounded by technologically competent people, but I never hear notifications for anything anymore, it's all silenced. When I hear a phone ring, people are scrambling to answer it or swiping it away if spam.

email is for school spam, bill pay, and mass marketing.
