Is Hillsdale the new Harvard?

During my first week on campus, a girl I met suggested over dinner that 9/11 was justified because the United States had meddled in Middle East politics. She went on to say that the 9/11 memorial should be changed so as to show more respect to Muslims." Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds like some who misinterprets what other people are saying. Yes, that does sound very familiar.

Sounds like the girl also is desperately in search of confirmation bias. And also seems to be attracted to nontraditional educational experiences -- a third-tier all-women's college to a third-tier all-Libertarian college. And then thinks that transfer is ... noteworthy or some shit like that.

Not to mention Bin Laden was crystal clear one of his motives for 9/11 was American meddling in the Middle East. That's a pretty accurate statement. Might have come as a surprise to someone who might have lived a sheltered, conservative life steeped in jingoism and murkafukyeah sentiments, however. It's not hard to see how she might have internalized a statement like that as someone saying the attack was justified. I mean, it WAS "justified" -- to Bin Laden and his followers. I have no idea what the bit about changing the memorial refers to, but sure, it probably should be inclusive. Muslims suffered horribly in the aftermath. I was never a huge George W. Bush fan but one very good thing he and his administration did was go out of their way to call for calm and oppose reprisals against the Muslim community after 9/11. If our Bryn Mawr-cum-Hillsdale princess thinks that's bad, well, I guess that's sort of student who's attracted to Hillsdale.

Here's hoping she doesn't get raped there, though. Hillsdale goes out of its way to avoid being subject to Title IX. What's funny is some seem to think that's a virtue.

Bryn Mawr is 3rd tier? The whole premise of the article was that she went from a "storied" East Coast school to Hillsdale (which at the time was probably ranked 48 or so). Bryn Mawr has dropped in ranking while Hillsdale is the college gaining most in rank every year among all LACs. Hillsdale will surpass Bryn Mawr next year in the rankings. They already have the same endowment with a lower acceptance rate. As far as being raped goes, Hillsdale is one of the safest places in Michigan at least as most of the students don't want sex before marriage.

I hope so. Might make it easier for my kid to get into Harvard!

But I guess nobody is leaving the elite East Coast schools for Hillsdale.

She flunked out of Bryn Mawr, so there's that. Interesting that HIllsdale accepts people who appear to have negative GPA's.

They sound like totally normal, well-adjusted young adults.

Every Bryn Mawr student I ever met -- and I knew quite a few -- would never have called themselves a "girl".

It's a WOMEN'S college, after all.

The average Hillsdale incoming high school GPA is 3.89. What are you talking about? That is the highest in Michigan. It is higher than the University of Michigan.

This whole statement is ridiculous, but the last bit takes the cake. As someone attended Christian college, the students want sex. Many believe it's not right out of the context of marriage, true. But, Conservative Christianity also fosters a level of sexism alongside naivete like yours that enables sexual predators to do a lot of damage with little to no repercussion. Look at the investigation into Liberty right now. Your stance is so ignorant.

The problem is ideological capture and doxastic closure at our so-called “elite” schools. Look at any of Peter Boghossian’s recent videos. The new one with the elite high school debaters is just total cringe.

The part about students not wanting sex was tongue-in-cheek (although ask most students what they think on this topic - well, there is a certain stereotype). This talk of a rape investigation is completely off topic anyways and only exists to disparage the school.

I think once big donors and heads of finance firms stop hiring aggressively from Harvard due to perceived antisemitism, the desirability of Harvard will fall. The reason is that many students want to go there for a perceived golden ticket to wealth… but it won’t be a ticket for the non-wealthy if it is no longer a core school for much of finance.

I’m not hiring Harvard students anymore- I don’t want to hire people who are constantly told they are the best and brightest - prefer smart humble and hard working.
