Is Hillsdale the new Harvard?

This wasn’t always the case, as Kalamazoo College is great, but in the last 20 years or so Hillsdale has become more attractive because of its unique identity, its academic rigor and pedagogical ethos. It is a traditional school and attracts conservatives for that very reason. It isn’t Harvard, but because it is completely private it does whatever it wants, which is to be an educational institution devoted to an older conception of the liberal arts. They don’t really care much about academic trends, and their purpose is to help mold a well-rounded and moral citizen. The students aren’t trained to be activists to create a new society, but to conserve and appreciation of the cultural monuments of the past. It has a fascinating history full of successes and major problems which you can take a look at. Hillsdale takes a libertarian approach both to funding and probably irritates people who want conformity and control over education, but because they do this they actually have a lot of money and have proven higher education can exist out of the public university model.

Fellow Michigander here and not buying your take. Hillsdale attracts a certain type of student - conservative/libertarian - while the other state LACs attract a range of students, some liberal, some moderate, some conservative, etc. Kalamazoo and Calvin (now referred to as a university) are the only two located in small cities. This most recent wave of college students appear to be more interested in urban/suburban settings than rural and Hillsdale may be the most remote of all the MI LACs.

Again, Hillsdale is attractive to a certain type of student in Michigan but not all of them.

Arnn didn’t refer to non-white students as Dark Ones, you dork. He referred to non-white faces as dark ones (darkly colored faces). Which is evident from the clip in context. This isn’t a video game in which people are referring to “the Dark Ones”.

I didn’t say all students are attracted to Hillsdale. Liberals have the knives out for Hillsdale because of its increased prominence and opposition to their goals, but for certain people who want a more traditional school it is the right fit. Regardless of what type of school you want to be at, Hillsdale has a very rigorous academic profile. It might not be your cup of tea, but Oberlin isn’t mine. It doesn’t mean I think Oberlin is a bad school.

You realize that’s a distinction without a difference, right? Generally, your face matches the rest of you. And do you realize how terrible it is to accuse the BOV of only coming the school to count ”dark faces”? Lack of diversity something you aren’t proud of, Arnn?

Why is he referring York faces anyway? Unless he care about race? Because you keep saying Hillsdale is some utopia where no one see race. We’ll, apparently Arnn does.

People have their knives out for Hillsdale because it forgoes federal money, which hurts their students and allows them to discriminate, violate civil rights, not investigate rape, act like racist tools, punish LGBTQ students and pretend it’s 1950. In particular, they have their knives out on DCUM because someone is all over this board saying tonic stuff like “Hillsdale will replace Harvard”.

If you are the PP I think you are, you wrote that Hillsdale has basically displaced Kalamazoo as top private for MI students and that just doesn’t necessarily seem the case.

It’s not a “bad school”. Just filled with bad people.

So let’s take a look at a recent story from Oberlin. Which is a supposedly good progressive liberal arts college ranked around the same as Hillsdale. Some students of color went into a nearby store, Gibson’s Bakery, and robbed them of wine. Students at Oberlin accused the bakery of racism. Gibson Bakery sued Oberlin and won 33 million dollars. Professors from the school supported the black students, with no apology. I think you can learn a lot of things at Oberlin, but I wouldn’t want to study there.

Your face matches the rest of you? Who says that? That’s what you are saying? No, your face doesn’t match the rest of you. Dear Darwin.

Wow. In your world 2015 is a “recent story”? Lemme guess— Hillsdale grad?

Arnn was referring to “dark faces” because the government came to the school and wanted to count the number of people with skin that wasn’t white.

Why? Trying to change the subject from the racist, rape-y, bigoted little RWNJ college that counts “dark faces,” is leading the book banning movement, will kick out kids for expressing affection for same sex partners, refuses to allow students 1A rights, refuses to allow discussions of gender and sexuality in classes (makes for one valuable English, sociology or psychology degree), traffics in fake news and conspiracy theories and has Trumps little felons come speak? Yeah. I would try to change the subject too.

One incident 8 years ago =/= giving up millions in federal money to retain the right to engage in a pattern and practice of discrimination and ongoing violations of civil rights, including blaming the woman for her own rape.

The Larry Arnn story was from 2013.

The rape story is irrelevant, as it has nothing to do with the point of the OP’s question. That was a hysterical screed of word salad that demonstrates how much the left is afraid of Hillsdale.
