NP--No top 50 research university is admitting idiots. They may be admitting some very smart students who aren't super interested in learning or who have addictions or mental health issues that keep them from showing you their potential, but they're not idiots. |
Fascinating how so many people are so certain of their opinions here. Only the admissions office has all the facts that were used to make their decisions, so anything we say is just speculation. |
+1 Professors come and go, so I do not give their opinions too much weight, though I know many tenured professors at T20. |
The fact remains that the over prepping ruined the tests for the students, and now the colleges are. looking for different attributes.
Teaching to the test is not what our students aspire to. |
Listen to an old Allen Iverson press conference. Georgetown had no problem admitting him |
Just to be clear, you're suggesting to me that the students who can't add a column of numbers and write a paragraph describing a simple process are NOT idiots? I had a student at a top 20 program come up to me and insist she had never seen an exponent before. She literally had no idea how to raise something to the third power. Another student didn't understand that 10% and 1/10th are the same thing. I'm not making this up. Do you teach? |
You're not a professor. |
Thanks for your opinion on that! |
California’s entire Black population is only 5.5%. OOO admittance to UC schools are as bad as OOO admittance to NC schools. Your 3.4% flex isn’t what you think it is. I know two kids from San Diego who were admitted to UCLA and chose Morehouse and Howard respectively. Yeah I know it my anecdote, but it aligns with what the other poster wrote about her child choosing Harvard over Berkley. |
Racism at US universities is alive and well.

I wouldn't be surprised if these were recruited athletes. This is where standards are absurdly lowered. |
They were not athletes. Surprisingly, the athletes in my classes have been pretty good. At least, they are very motivated. Then again I'm not at a school that has a top 10 college basketball program, where I'm sure standards for academics in sports are much lower |
And colleges still won't accept all stem majors, so good luck. |
THAT IS TEST PREP. ![]() |
Yes, this. Also, “Asians” are already diverse in multiple measures (socio-economic, country of origin, etc) https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/04/29/key-facts-about-asian-americans/ It’s not striving for a balanced, diverse class that shuts high achieving Asians out. It’s the fact that other “diverse” races are prioritized. |
