So you get only the small, political zealots of the group who go to their conference in OC- which becomes an echo chamber of far left ideas- way farther left than most of the actual teachers. It's a real disconnect.

And as saying teachers should "speak out about the MCEA" that would be absolute career suicide. I dont blame or expect them to do that.

MCEA isn't about teachers. Its a business and its looking after their interests not their forced due's paying members.

I think this is the most accurate response. I personally don't feel scared, I know just my voice won't do anything. Now, if you convince 14,000 others to do the same, then we are talking. But I'm not going to speak out against MCEA - that's not my battle to fight. I don't care enough about them. I won't vote, I won't attend meetings, they can F right off. I have tried calling them for help for myself and with my own child when he wasn't getting services, and they blew me off. I KNOW they do not look after us.

But I absolutely LOVE it when people in the community all gang up on teachers though! It's super cute and fun. We didn't start MCEA, it was here before us. All I can do is leave the union. I just want to teach - not deal with political bs. We had no idea they would even be at the county council meeting. Take what you will with that...but think before you pop off here about how it's all my fault I don't speak up- don't lump all of us together. MCEA is a separate entity from the bulk of teachers AND they 100% act like it.

Sure, it's not about teachers but teachers elect them so it is about teachers. You know what I'm saying.

So true!!!

So true. If that many teachers were upset about MCEA or didn’t like what they mostly did, then the simple answer would be to stop paying those Union Dues. Or get together with a bunch of like minded teachers and have a chat with the union president.

MCEA business model is supposed to be about protecting and supporting teachers. If it’s not accomplishing that, then its key stakeholders should make that known.

Shut up. Previous poster said they stopped paying union dues. “So true” spoken like someone who truly has no idea what they are talking about.

Who said they stopped paying dues? And eho said people that left the union should vote?

In the above chain, one teacher said all they can do is leave the union, not that she actually left. And the other poster suggested meeting with the union president.

Regardless, if you agree the union negotiating on your behalf is making you and your profession look bad, why don’t you want to do anything about it?

Because I have better things to do. I don’t really care about optics. I do my job. I’m not here to appease whiny, ignorant, DCUM scum.

hate to break it to you but..here you are

It was just appalling when the union showed me trash cans and recycling bins in a backroom and told me to rife through it and make a dozen binders to save my teaching job. They non renew teachers who have to guts to fail students who don't show up or defy any work instruction.

It must be incredibly embarrassing to get fired from MCPS. I imagine you wouldn’t want your friends/family to know about it, so your feelings of inadequacy are probably bursting from holding all that in. Is that why you bring it up on an anonymous forum at every opportunity?

No the reason is part pstd talk therapy from being helpless in a toxic gaslighting blame the teacher environment with no support and part wanting to warn people thinking about the profession of what it has become in order to save Americans money and livelihood from getting pulled into the trap we call education where they are expected to give everything and give up self respect, physical, and mental health. Further it is to enlighten the public of the things we have to deal with in a backward system ran by mismanaged to make teachers powerless even when attacked in the classroom.

So basically I am not embarrassed from working 80 hour work weeks and looking bully union thugs and principals in the face and telling them that I give consequences for student malfeasance and I give the grades earned and I don't fudge numbers. My only embarrassment is my ignorance of joining this toxic profession and wasting so much money on ideals in the first place.

Don't you feel embarrassed for supporting an environment where teachers are oppressed for trying g and the only way to get ahead is to follow the corruption that leads to degredation of in the profession.

For the record I was non renewed, not fired, for not artificially making up data ie non reporting violence and behavior incidents and inflating grades. I feel proud not embarrassed that I fought the good fight and didn't go with the tide of make youe principal happy
OR ELSE mentaity.

Don't you think it's weird that principals are promoted when they leave the authorities out of the loop in violence and rape cases and teachers are given a hard time and potentially non renewal when we follow protocol to a T.

Why do you think the teacher attrition is at crisis levels?
Why do you think students in university are not choosing teaching?

I would say they probably witnessed first hand chaos in the classroom and heard what teachers have to deal with and they say NO WAY DUDE!

When teachers speak the truth on the news many times they are shown in with blurred or darker out faces because they fear retaliation. It is a very popular fix for loose lips.

I don’t understand what they were asking you to do.

When up for non renewal they make you use their goodwill room of junk supplies to make binders for their board of people when you try to defend your contract

Teachers have contracts governing certain aspects of their employment, but they’re not contractors. A "non-renewed" teacher is generally eligible for unemployment-- a contractor would not be.

You were fired. Schools just have a different term for it.

Actually I was non renewed butt of course the powers that be lied to dllr and tried to block my ui but I had the paperwork. It's just sad the overlord bully dynamic against teachers.
Anonymous
When they try to force teachers to resign it is so they can block ui bit I wasn't playing that game. It's cause teachers are so rich. Lol
Anonymous
Exactly. Contractors don't get unemployment. You weren't a contractor. When employees are let go due to job performance, the colloquial term describing that action is that they were "fired."

You were fired. From MCPS. As a teacher. That takes a lot.
Anonymous
No they non-renew contracts bc mcps teacher need 3 yr tenure before they get union protection. Before that is non-renewal without cause at the end of the year.

I'm sure they would love us to he indep contractors who buy all of our own supplies.lol
