I think she took steps to alter her physical appearance and also joined, and rose to leadership positions in, black professional or advocacy groups

It seems we're at an impasse about what it means to become something you aren't already, especially if what you are already is part of your ancestry and/or your genetic makeup.

I'm of the opinion that transgender people don't actually become the gender they identify as, any more than Eddie Redmayne became Stephen Hawking when he portrayed him in The Theory of Everything.

Are you a mental health professional trained in this field? If not, your opinion doesn't mean much.

Not the pp to whom you refer but quite frankly mental health professional do not diagnose trans kids they just agree or affirm the self proclaimed diagnosis. So guess what, pp's opinion is just as valid as a so called mental health professional trained in the trans field.

No, I'm a physicist but I think I have a pretty good grasp of what become means. You're free to offer up your own view.

The same way a man turns into a woman.

Once again, my point has been proven:

One cannot become another race, which would be markedly easier than becoming another gender, just by stating you’re that race or gender.

You’re born male or female and regardless of what you state or how you appear that in no way alters your chromosomes. This argument isn’t based on science.

So you're giving all credence to the great pseudo-scientists? That explains a lot.

They may be 1/4 black and look entirely white but call themselves black?

There are lots of scenarios

Of course you don't "become" a different gender just because you say you are. We are humans who are born as female or male. If you have surgery and take hormones, a male at birth will still never have a uterus. It's factual.
I am in favor of trans people being treated with respect and freedoms for all people but there are facts at play. I will refer to anyone who wants to be called she/her as such but that does not mean they "became" a woman.
