Can somebody explain what's so wrong about what this man did? (dogs peeing on his plants)

But I also think it’s fine for someone to post a warning about it both for dogs and children—it’s an unseen hazard and I can absolutely see my kids stepping on it accidentally, like if a bicycle or wheelchair was coming down the sidewalk and they stepped aside. I also think he planted his ugly bushes way too close to the sidewalk. They will be obstructing the sidewalk very soon.

I guess I also don’t see the problem with a dog peeing on an evergreen bush. It doesn’t hurt the bush. I don’t let my dog pee on flowers or fancy plantings but a bush or a tree that is right up against the sidewalk seems like fair game. I think of that area as sort of the penumbra of the sidewalk—if you are living in a dense urban or suburban environment you need to expect that there will be some incursions onto your property that abuts the sidewalk.

The plastic “spikes” aren’t sharp or hard enough to penetrate a shoe.

Good for him. So tired of dog owners assuming that everyone is fine with their pet using our yards as their toilet. I don't go pee in theirs so I'd hope for the same respect. It's just so gross. Would love to set up a deterrent for the dogs here. The self entitlement of pet owners is unbelievable.

This dog owner thinks it's fine.

There was a lot more background in the original NextDoor thread to the effect that this guy has screamed at neighbors (children) for “stealing a rock” from his lawn, posted signs demanding that people pay him, and is just generally kind of a loon and a nuisance. We don’t live there so I can’t confirm whether any of that is accurate, but the actual thread gave a much different impression from this article.

He also built an absolute monstrosity of a house. No getting around that. It’s seriously hideous. So I suspect this isn’t all about the “spikes”.

I see nothing wrong with it.

He's a nut.

Evidence #1 - he designed the house/yard.

Evidence #2 - sign he had up earlier.

His property, his prerogative.

Yes, I see where the animosity comes from now. He doesn't understand how life works.

Still, there's nothing wrong with the spikes. They're not dangerous and act as a deterrent.

This makes sense to me. Laying down the spikes in isolation would be fine, but it seems like this guy has quite the reputation for being a huge a++hole and this is just one instance in a long line of instances he's had with neighbors.

+1 The spikes are fine. Pooches can go pee elsewhere on less expensive shrubbery. But that house looks like a 1970s dormitory. Just awful.

It’s fine. My dogs, kid, and I would just avoid him and his property. As a homeowner, I get that it’s annoying, but $300 per shrub for those?! That’s the crime here. Who would pay that for those things...?

That house isn't half as bad as one of our neighbors homes.

People and pets should not be going on other people's lawns. Have your pets do their business on your own yard.

The guy sounds intense but I prefer his house to every hideous, unbalanced, and totally lacking in proportion Craftsman in Northern Virginia.

The spikes look aggressive but aren't. No harm done.

Dude is totally fine. Social media reaction insane (but what's new?).

For the record dogs are great, but unfortunately some dog owners in this area are entitled assholes with no respect or consideration of others. I wish there was a solution as effective as these mats for such people.
