Can somebody explain what's so wrong about what this man did? (dogs peeing on his plants)

Nothing wrong with putting a scat mat in front of your pushes. He is correct that dogs or cats will avoid it. Regardless of whether dog urine killed his expensive yews, he is perfectly in the right. I feel bad for him that busybodies attacked him.

It’s fine — it’s his property. But I also think it’s fine for someone to post a warning about it both for dogs and children—it’s an unseen hazard and I can absolutely see my kids stepping on it accidentally, like if a bicycle or wheelchair was coming down the sidewalk and they stepped aside. I also think he planted his ugly bushes way too close to the sidewalk. They will be obstructing the sidewalk very soon.

I guess I also don’t see the problem with a dog peeing on an evergreen bush. It doesn’t hurt the bush. I don’t let my dog pee on flowers or fancy plantings but a bush or a tree that is right up against the sidewalk seems like fair game. I think of that area as sort of the penumbra of the sidewalk—if you are living in a dense urban or suburban environment you need to expect that there will be some incursions onto your property that abuts the sidewalk.

Because they are hearty bushes with established root systems. It's actually dog crap that kills grass.

Dog owner here. I see nothing wrong with what he did. Dogs should not be allowed to urinate or defecate on people’s lawns. Although, they should be allowed to on the portion of grass between the sidewalk and the road as that is city property. Although of course, always pick up after your dog!

It’s fine.

But he should just plant holly bushes along the sidewalk.

What's not neighborly is letting your animal kill someone's expensive landscaping with urine.

Dog pee doesn't kill those plants. Poor drainage and soil do. Don't you think dog owners would have dead landscaping?

No, they do not, because I never see dogs out in their own yards!!
Their owners instead walk them with those long extendable leases permitting them to go all over others' yards.

No, urine kills grass. Haven't you seen the yellow spots in green grass? That is from dog pee.

I have no problem with what he did. Some dog owners can be so inconsiderate

I prefer deer deterrents that are motion activated water sprayers. Keeps deer and dogs away. I see nothing wrong with using the mats on his property. His neighbors are nasty.

Part of the problem is that his neighborhood does not have the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street. They look like crappy sidewalks and his bushes are right about on top of them. If the mats and bushes were set back a few inches from the sidewalk, it wouldn’t be such an issue.

Comes with the territory of choosing to live in a location with heavy foot traffic. I’m sure the neighbors hate the house so that was part of it.

This isn’t fun, no one is good or even that terrible. Yawn.

I don’t see it as a problem for pets. I think people complaining about it on that basis are just looking for something to complain about.

However, as a klutz myself, I’d worry more about having it so close to the sidewalk. If a kid running, riding a bike, roller skating, etc., fell down, it looks like it could be an issue.
