I don’t know the circumstances, but wouldn’t having direct experience with the game be relevant to soccer discussion? Like in a healthcare forum asking about plastic surgery, wouldn’t it make since to say “ I have a medical degree and 5 PGY in dermatology when giving an opinion? |
not to negate myself based on PP's standard, but the landscape now doesn't remotely resemble what was around 30 years ago. This is true from youth rec through college |
Agree. But many of these people and their families have intimate knowledge of the landscape and the game and have been involved due to every generation and nieces/nephews and relatives, including their own, along the way. There are definitely so.many.more kids playing these days. And, I readily admit (as somebody that played D1 soccer...ha, ha ), the kids today have better technical skill at younger ages. The sheer number of teams, leagues and kids is mind-boggling. |

Ha. Well there is also the fact that the Coaches played college in soccer, some at the same time as the parents. Is the other pp then saying, the Coach's experience of 20 years playing at a high level does not translate to his/her knowledge in the sport? Anyone that has done that has a pretty good idea of the type of commitment and training and injuries and time it takes in the sport..and if they are from this area, they probably know a helluva lot about the Clubs too. |
Newsflash for Mr. Know-It-All Outside of this country we run soccer without these bloated festered budgets you guys have…. And guess what!?!?! We create world stars. My youth coaches only got help with gas money and little stipend. It’s the love and passion for the game. Did you miss the post about some random wacko collecting $15k a year with a C license? And yet thinks he deserves more! That’s all you need to know. You can now go to sleep. |
Travel coaches in the DMV were volunteer for a good part of my youth. They were not paid. ^^ just like this guy says. It wasn't until late 80s that they started getting some $. |
I'm the one that wrote the first post that was quoted above and I agree with this last post. Things are SOOOOOOO different now. I know many people that that played in college 25 years ago and are clueless. It doesn't mean that they are good coaches. It doesn't mean that they can connect with kids. Doesn't mean that they know what is best for kids development. For example....I went through K-12 and have a masters degeree...it doesn't mean know what the best teaching methods are for today's kids. |

And no, playing in college 15-20 years ago does NOT mean that you know how to navigate today's league structures and college recruiting, etc. Someone also brought up training and injury. Every thing has changed....what we know about performance training, injury prevention, etc is much different. Just about everything has changed. I'm not saying I don't value other people's opinions. I'm just saying that I don't value someone's opinion JUST because they played college soccer 15-20 years ago. |
That’s great. I don’t value the opinion of someone who has never played the sport, especially when they are loud on the sidelines and think what they are suggesting to a 11-year old is easy. It takes time for a striker to develop the depth perception and timing of a shot...what looks like an easy 1v1 on a breakaway and clear shot is anything but for a kid learning. So many parents watch FIFA and come to kid games mouthing off from the sidelines and expecting the same kind of play. |
Find a new team. Our coach has a no parents commenting rule. The kids universally love it |

add another one to the list- the my kid should play for free and get quality coaching because a coach should sacrifice 10 hours a week per team for the love of the game. And that coach should be qualified and understand development and be great with kids |
