No denying that, Hunter Biden seems like a major screw up. It doesn’t really have much to do with the President as far as I can tell.

My guess:
Hunter knows Delaware USSS agents personally due the protection he and his family were afforded for 8 years. He was having a suicidal drunken episode and his spouse/GF threw out the gun to get it away from him. Spouse likely knows nothing about firearms, including proper disposal.

Once they realize the mistake they made, Hunter reaches out to one of his contacts at the USSS and asks if they can help him retrieve the weapon and dispose of it.

Very sad situation all around. I can understand why they wanted to keep it quiet, as it involved a mental health issue. Media attention would likely increase his shame and drive him to suicide.

Is the man a hot mess? Sure. But every family has issues. My brother is mentally ill and completely estranged from our family. He’s nowhere near my place of business and I’m not responsible for him.

Considering that Politico's "sources" are two random, unidentified people and that the Secret Service has no record of it, I doubt it.

This is embarrassing muckraking. Make sure you read the entire story to find the fact that the gun store owner never talked to the Politico reporter.

That was a lie, as evidence that has come to light proves.

Secret Service was involved... Why? Does Biden know anything about this? His spokesperson says he doesn't, but we can't trust his statement. How did the SS know about this and who sent them?

You know damn well that if Don Jr. or Eric Trump had this story written about them when their dad was president, Trump would have been asked about it... in fact, it would probably be the first question.

Biden didn't have secret service protection, so this isn't a case of Biden sending his detail as you suggest.
