Colgate! Saw a huge leap in applications this year. https://www.colgate.edu/news/stories/colgate-receives-record-number-applications-admission

Tufts has about 1600 spots, 34k/1600 = 21x

The below articles say that the Tufts school of arts and letters has 1600 spots; school of engineering has 1200 spots and school of the museum of fine arts has 300 spots. If you look at arts and sciences by itself, 24k applications for 1600 spots (15x). Still impressive, but isn’t Tufts the king of yield protection, which is colloquially referred to as Tufts Syndrome? U Chicago, Wake Forest, Swarthmore, to name a few in addition to Tulane, all email relentlessly to drum up interest. And notwithstanding the mailings still seem to be in demand for the right reasons.

You aren't reading the first document you linked correctly! The total number of enrolled students for the class of 2024 is 1,615. This is then broken down into the individual schools. Tufts' total undergrad population is a bit shy of 6,000--just google it!

NP. Just keep in mind, application numbers vs seats doesn't take into account yield. Not everyone accepted will enroll.

Side comment: "Tufts Syndrome" was a reputation they developed some years back and is less applicable now - it's not as though those who choose to attend are lower stat. In other words, while every college manages yield, and high stats applicants who fail to show fit/interest may be denied, the ones who are accepted and attend also have high stats. This is distinguishable from Tulane, which is now king of yield protection - denying high stat kids deemed unlikely to attend - and enrolls slightly lower stat kids (avg GPA 3.55)

NP here. I saw the list of “hot” schools on the first page of this post and had to laugh. My DD has expressed interest in most of those schools! I didn’t make the connection before, but I think it may well be because they are “hot” LOL! I’d like to think her choices run deeper than that. But hey, there’s something to be said for nice weather! Nice work PP!

Every school your kid applies so is the "hot school"

^^^ At this point, the match school that accepts DC will be his hot school. The safety that accepted him is fine, but not hot.

Good point. The "Draw Rate" which is equal to Yield Rate/Admit Rate might be a better measure. It's intended to penalize schools that attempt to boost application numbers given that yield usually drops when they do that. See

https://www.highereddatastories.com/2019/12/yes-your-yield-rate-is-still-falling.html

At least for 2018 (most recent data at link above), neither Tulane nor Colgate fares too well when it comes to draw rate, with draw rates in the mid 1's. NYU and WashU's are in the low to mid 2s, and Tufts in the low 3s. To put these numbers in perspective Stanford's draw rate was 18, Dartmouth's 7, and Amherst's 3.1.

DS would choose a “high draw” school like Stanford over Tulane or Colgate in a heartbeat, but it is not relevant for him bc there is no way he’s getting in. So Tulane or Colgate or what have you would be plenty hot for him. I know, I know, many people on DCUM look down on colleges that are not Tier 1, but that is not realistic for probably the vast majority of students.

Virginia tech. Nearly impossible to get in this year.

Ignore anyone who thinks that way! Getting into those schools is a great accomplishment! Wishing him all the best in college and beyond.

Other than the obvious ones (Ivies, Berkeley, Stanford), schools that weren't as "hot" before but are now due to tech focus:

MIT
Carnegie Mellon
Georgia Tech
UT Austin
University of Pittsburgh

Schools that are hot now due to USNews (but perhaps shouldn't be):

Vanderbilt
Rice
Notre Dame

^^ Whats the deal with Vanderbilt? Vanderbilt, ND and U Chicago have always been well regarded, so why do they catch flak here on DCUM. What am I missing?

If schools like Vanderbilt, ND and Rice aren’t “legit” in their appeal, then what realistically is left? Maybe 20 or so schools out of a universe of 1000+? That’s so silly it can’t be taken seriously.

The DCUM favorites.
