Which Area Private Schools Have the Largest Endowments?

Would you invest $30,000/yr (X multiple years) in a school with an endowment of $10 million vs $1 billion? and Why? or Why not?

I think I provided these numbers. As I stated a few posts later (I should have made the connection clear), the numbers were a couple of years old. They are reliable for that time. I am not going to provide my source.

You are welcome to report more recent or better information if you have it. I'd be very interested in seeing how these numbers have evolved.

I am not criticizing you for being skeptical, by the way.

I think that if you were sufficiently interested, you might be able to make an educated guess by looking at the schools' balance sheets. They are required to report annually to the IRS, and Guidestar provides free access to those reports. However, the most recent filings are often not available.

Someone has to say it ...

It's not the size that matters, but rather what you do with it.

Touche.

But why are so many here striving for the "Big 3" and "HYP". These schools top the endowment heap in their categories.
Anonymous
GDS was $10.5 million at the end of the last school year. There's an annual budget report that parents have access to.

Precisely. As one example.

Not the same as an endowment. That's a direct income-stream.

Which shows that endowments don't tell the whole story re a private school's wealth/resources.
Anonymous
Correct.

Georgetown Prep's endowment is about $50 million (2 years ago)

A better yardstick of an institution's "financial cushion" is the endowment/ pupil ratio.
Anonymous
That seems very low for STA

$45 million is much too high for STA. Trying cutting that figure in half to arrive at a better estimate. NCS is not too far off on the lower side.
Anonymous
Where is NCS? Hmmmm.

The dwindling coffers of the Catholic diocese and enrollments at Catholic Schools across the nation are well reported and known.

What is the status of the Episcopal diocese of Washington, D.C. (and nationally)? What's the impact on the financial bottomline at STA and NCS?

Does the Episcopal diocese contribute to the annual operating budgets or STA and NCS and/or their endowments?

Is this information buried or suppressed to allow the preferred exaggerated hype over these institutions in our community?

I think you're either being paranoid or else intentionally trying to stir up conflict. I just went to each school's website, typed in "endowment" in the search box, and found plenty of info. I suspect a simple Google or Bing search would yield further info.

Maret Endowment
Maret is built on core values that resonate through our 100-year history and guide our vision as we approach the Centennial in 2011. While our values remain timeless, Maret is in motion to realize our full potential, to capitalize upon our strengths and to build upon our achievements.

With a new Strategic Plan, Framework for the Future, Maret celebrates our second century of growth committed to ever evolving excellence for our programs, our students and our faculty. A robust endowment is at the heart of the Strategic Plan to ensure our financial strength for today and tomorrow.

What is an endowment?
An endowment is a fund in which the principal is preserved and a portion of the income is directed to the budget each year to support the programs of the school. A gift to endowment is powerful, as it is a lasting gift that impacts Maret every year.

How does endowment help Maret?
Maret’s endowed funds support the faculty, our students on financial aid, special programs and initiatives, and the general needs of the school. An endowment also builds financial strength for the school as income can be used to offset costs and to help stabilize tuition needs.

How do we compare to our peer schools?
Maret’s current endowment is $12.7 million. The average of our local peer schools is $22 million. Several schools in the area have endowments approaching $50 million.

What are our goals?
Maret seeks to raise $37 million to reach a total endowment of $50 million. The key initiatives of the strategic plan and the cost to fund them are:

Students & Financial Aid
$15 million

Faculty & Programs
$15 million

Institute
$3 million

General Endowment
$4 million

TOTAL
$37 million

Can the PP who provided this link tell us what Maret's endowment is from the information provided?

....The endowment has recovered to pre-recession levels of approximately $22 million.

Today the endowment of NCS is $22 million according to the report.

STA is no too far off from this number I presume.

To the PP that provided this link. What is the endowment figure for Sidwell? I could not find it in the summary.
