Which Area Private Schools Have the Largest Endowments?

20:32 here. Let me rephrase that, they match the website.

Stupid and/or naive question...why does size of endowment matter?

Helps defray tuition increases or otherwise keeps programming in place without additional fees to parents.

Not true. As President of a Foundation, unless specifically directed towards a specific area of interiest i.e. tuition/scholarships, income (or total returns0 from enowments can go towards building a new gym, maintenance, hiring the best faculty, basically to anything the schools deems important. What is significant is where the funds are designated within the endowment.

I can't find them. Could you (or someone) please post a link with the source(s) for these numbers? Whoever posted them originally must have some source.

Usually in the about us section there is a link called sustainability or something like that. There you find the numbers you are looking for!

Every time I see the subject line of this thread, I think about the guys at the school being well-endowed, or not.

Which schools have the most well-endowed guys, do you think? I'm going with Gonzaga

I think these numbers are 2-3 years old. I know Holton's endowment was $51m before the markets melted down and it was lower last year. Don't know how much it has recovered since. Would assume similar fluctuations at other schools.

I'm pretty certain these numbers are pre-stock market crash, so you'd need to discount by say 15-20%. The endowments in this area are pretty low compared to some other geographic areas or to the old-line boarding schools, but they made big gains since the 1980s. Endowment does matter a lot to trying to keep tuition down or offer a lot of financial aid -- Andover and Exeter (which are the Harvards of the secondary school worlds in terms of endowment) rely on endowment draw for a large part of their budget (50% some years) and can offer extremely generous financial aid while still maintaining a ridiculous level of facilities. But, again, the day school world, and the day school world in Washington DC, is just different from the boarding school model.

Actually Holton is still holding steady at 51 million!

Where is NCS? Hmmmm.

Holton $51 million
Sidwell $47 million
STA $45 million
Potomac $35 million

Completely inaccurate.

No source no credibility.

(2011) Think 20 to 30 million dollar range except for Georgetown Prep at about $50 million!

I think I provided these numbers. As I stated a few posts later (I should have made the connection clear), the numbers were a couple of years old. They are reliable for that time. I am not going to provide my source.

You are welcome to report more recent or better information if you have it. I'd be very interested in seeing how these numbers have evolved.

Why is it very easy to find the endowment numbers with links and a data source for Harvard, Yale and Princeton; Andover, Exeter and Groton; Collegiate, Brearley, Chapin, but not STA, Sidwell, NCS, GDS and Maret?

Is this information buried or suppressed to allow the preferred exaggerated hype over these institutions in our community?

Just curious. If anyone can provide a link to information about the endowments and or endowment/pupil of any of the D.C. area private schools ("elite and/or no elite"; "Big 3 or Little 3")?
