No equivalent? What about sweat pants? If the purpose of the legging is to provide warmth, why not wear sweat pants instead of shorts?

Have you ever tried to run ten miles in sweatpants? Chafing city, ouch! The leggings provide support and sometimes compression; the shorts on top are for modesty and sometimes also pockets or other benefits.

I guess my confusion comes from the newness of this trend. Guys ran and worked out for decades in regular sweatpants and I wasn't aware that sweatpants caused so many issues (though I might have been ignorant to the issue).

Either way it's just a funky looking style that seems to have popped up in the last couple of years. Plus most of the time I see guys doing this at the gym and not on long distance runs.

RE: modestly. I might be totally missing the point but as long as a guy is wearing underwear under those tights, what is the modestly concern? Wouldn't underwear "keep everything in place?"

I think they're often not. Compression tights don't leave much room for anything underneath. I don't wear anything under my yoga pants, and those aren't even as tight as a lot of running tights.

They have to keep their legs warm somehow.

Men are very self conscious about exposing their birthday gifts, or lack there of.

I agree, it looks wonky and I much prefer the leghins plain.

Because they think it looks cool.

I see it with soccer players on cold days at DC’s school.

Compression tights really help with certain injuries, swelling, etc. Many high level athletes wear them for this reason.

That's where sweatpants come in handly.

Think its a practical look; i hate seeing men just in tight compression leggings. It just looks embarrassing. Leggings aren't pants.

You can't run for miles in loose, bulky sweatpants. No serious runner will do this.

Yuck. Sweatpants are also cotton and would get wet and heavy. Who runs in sweat pants?

Tights/ shorts combination is warmer, lighter, and more aerodynamic than wearing sweatpants.

I would thank them for covering up. What seems to be the issue, OP?

I can’t believe this is even being questioned. Compression leggings are used to keep everything in place (the balls and dick flap around less when running and/or working out). The shorts go over it because the leggings are really tight and can show the outline of the shaft to the dick head. I doubt anyone who works out cares what others think are fashionable when working out.

many women should do the same, those form shaping tights y'all wear don't work too well.

Except...this is a new phenomenon. What did y’all do before this trend?
