Except for the storming the Capitol part, sure.

Yes, breaking windows and looting a Target is exactly the same as storming the Capitol while Congress is in session and attempting to overthrow the results of a democratic election.

+1. Enough with the false equivalence. I have zero sympathy for the BLM looters, but this was on a whole different level.

What is your issue with the email specifically? Fwiw, we are Janney parents and are supportive of the way the school is handling it and how it was discussed in classes today.

Janney parent here. What is the actual criticism of the email? I am grateful that our school faces these events head on and makes sure our kids know they can talk about it and ask questions.

It is not a topic that needed be discussed, particularly in this way, with my FOUR year old pre-K child.

Don’t participate. Simple as that

Well, you then get to opt out. There are also 11 year olds who attend the same school.

Why is this not a topic for 4 year olds, exactly? They understand what unfairness and cruelty look like. They may also know that adults were upset and anxious yesterday and may need to help process it.

Yes, and that’s why it should be handled on a classroom level, not at the morning whole-community meeting. The same as schools treat shooter drills. What is appropriate to discuss and not discuss is vastly different by grade.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to opt out since the principal sent the email half an hour before the morning meeting where this was discussed- during the morning “kids getting ready rush.” I didn’t even see it until well after and was quite upset by the discussion at the meeting

What is the possible problem? You think they are going to get into constitutional law or something?

Oh give me a break. You didn't read your email while your kids were "getting ready" for school in their house? BS.

Are you kidding me? Your four year old is not the only kid at the school. You didn't read an email that would have given you the information you needed to opt out. There are literally hundreds of older kids at the school and the principal did a wonderful job of balancing the needs of all of her students. My kids received age-appropriate discussions in each of their morning meetings, and we discussed it as a family as well.

Bravo for Janney! Racists can F off. They don't believe in public education anyway. Go slink off into your holes. Losers.

My Ks class focused on Kindness and Love. There was no outward mention of anything except by 2 students who brought it up and the teacher gracefully redirected to fairness etc. I thought that was totally age appropriate.

Tangent: I love it when PK parents think DCPS schools should revolve around 4 year olds. It's to be expected every year, but it never ceased to amuse.

nowhere does it say all protesters yesterday were white supremacists. nowhere.

Hmm. Did you look at the confederate flags and outfits?

When I was growing up, the impulse of my parents would have been to shield us. For example, when Dr. King was assassinated, my parents definitely put the accent on his message and work and growing social movement, not on hatred towards black people (we are AA).

But in this world of social media, students are exposed to all sorts of messages and movements, and I imagine it’s very easy to get swept up. All students need to be warned. For example, if you are white (which I think most students at Janney are), these white supremacist movements need to be identified for what they are. Reportedly, the mother in law of the young woman killed at the Capitol wondered why she was even there.

Here is the difference. BLM riots weren’t driven by a desire to overthrow the government - which is a crime even if the Capitol police made it look otherwise. These people overtook the Capitol while in session to try and stop the new government from being certified. That’s sedition and treason. Or, am I supposed to it was just a coincidence that this it happened right as lawmakers were meeting?
