Janney principal email about yesterday’s events

Would this make you upset? Me and several parents are quite shocked and upset at this.

“I have reached out far too many times in the past few years with emails on how to talk to your child about challenging topics given events occurring in our community, our city, or our country. I am heartbroken to be reaching out this morning to let you know how we will be discussing the disgusting act of domestic terrorism that occurred yesterday with students today.

I know that many of us are still processing the insurrection by White supremacists that occurred yesterday at the US Capitol. As DC residents, we have been impacted in a unique was as some of our family members, friends, and neighbors were present at the Capitol.

We will be discussing yesterday’s events at Jamboree and during Morning Mornings and virtual instruction. You may choose to keep your child offline today or to skip Jamboree today. I am including what we will discuss at Jamboree at the end of this email to let you make the best decision for your child. Additionally, please know that our teachers and staff members are still processing what happened yesterday and they may need to cancel certain live lessons or may need to step away from the computer for all or part of the day. Thank you for being patience and flexible with them during this time.

Talking points at Jamboree:
*We will discuss the basic events: a large group of primarily White people forced their way into the US Capitol building. It was a scary time for many people.

*We will also let kids know that they will be able to talk about yesterday’s events today with teachers. Our children probably have a lot of questions and the adults won’t have all the answers. We will let students know that they – or their teachers - might need to take a break from parts of online learning today because this is hard to talk about.

*We also know the Black Lives Matter protestors were treated very differently this summer than the angry mob yesterday. This is an example of the power and privilege that exists in our country today.”

I wish our fcps would do this. Bravo to that principal.

why? She's saying here's what we're going to talk about, you can choose not to participate.

Seems like an appropriate and thoughtful email.

out of line.

nowhere does it say all protesters yesterday were white supremacists. nowhere.

Yeah I would quibble around the edges. I mean, she says "primarily White." It was entirely White. No need to sugarcoat.

The many Hitler quotes, the gallows, and the confederate flags would suggest otherwise.

You are quite shocked and upset because she says the protestors were white supremacists, when some of them might not have been?

Tough cookies, OP. Keep your kid out, then. Or maybe let them attend, so the school can counteract what must be the absolute nonsense you are feeding them at home.

Wow. That it completely out of line.

Even without all that, Trump/MAGA is essentially synonymous with white supremacy these days.

Good. Kudos to her.

"Not all terrorists are white supremacists." Does that help OP?

Absolutely appropriate. And if you don't like it and you actually are a Janney family, you don't have to have your child particulate. I'm guessing that those who think it inappropriate are not even DC residents and did not experience the sheer fear and terror that DC families experienced yesterday. Locked at home so that the DC police force could be diverted to Congress to save it from a coup that was fomented by the president and the Capital Police. Do not underestimate how many children are aware that something is wrong. Yesterday their parents spent all afternoon and evening staring at their phones completely freaking out. Certainly older elementary students may have watched it unfold live on tv with their parents, probably are already reading about it online and discussing with peers. This is a major national disaster that should be addressed in school. And if you did not already come to that conclusion yourself, you should take a good look in the mirror.

They literally carried the confederate and Nazi flags in the Capitol. Many wore shirts advocating genocide (6 million is not enough; Camp Auschwitz). We don't have to pretend that they aren't what they say they are.

Lol people in AUPark were not fearful and terrified yesterday. Horrified and disgusted, yes. But fearful? Oh come on. I was fearful over the summer with all that going on and spilling into our neighborhood. But yesterday was not that.
