Let's combat racism by emphasizing - race?

I don't care if they were white, black, or any shade in between. What was done was disgraceful and an insult to democracy and to our country. Period.

Yes. Agree.

Actually race is a very significant part of this story, even if you don’t give a crap about Black protesters being treated differently or choose to disregard the confederate flags and antisemitic garb. The race is the protesters undoubtedly influenced the Capitol police to treat the protesters in a benign fashion and underestimate the damage they were going to do. (They had been planning this for weeks— do you think it they were Black Lives Matter protests, the preparation would have been the same? No.). As a result, the capitol police were overrun and the symbol of our democracy was desecrated and we were made to look like a laughingstock in the world.

You realize it was literally our mayor’s - a black woman - decision to have a thin police presence, no violence by violence, and even unarmed guards? You realize she was the one who had requested unarmed and thinly present National guard presence which was there, just unarmed, as requested, and actually getting the full armed NG to a location takes time? We actually saw how much time it take to activate the NG during the protests over the summer. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-national-guard-protests-bowser/2021/01/04/220ced16-4e8d-11eb-83e3-322644d82356_story.html

The utter lack of understanding about who controls what in this city is really stunning for someone who purports to live here. Yes, the mayor didn't request 1000 national guard troops to cordon off the city because she, as it turns out totally incorrectly, figured that the incompetent fools of the Trump administration and at the Capitol Police might be able to protect federal property, over which the mayor has no jurisdiction. You'll notice that the area that the DC Police were assigned to protect was totally safe and went unscathed. Further, the mayor asked that no national guard troops be deployed against protestors in the summer and was totally ignored. I wonder what could be the difference? Could it be that the Trumpalos are scared of black people protesting but supported insurrectionist rioting by the illiterate cousin f**ckers who we saw yesterday? I think so.

You may not care, and that is, of course, your privilege. Perhaps, though, you have the imagination, if not the empathy, to understand that not all of us share your colorblind reaction to watching the armed, Confederate flag waving mob overrun the building that is supposed to symbolize the United States — with the possible complicity of at least some of the police, and the encouragement of the president.

Ignoring race and ignoring racism really won’t make it magically disappear.

They used the protected and peaceful protest activity by the masses outside the capital to further their own unlawful and very sick goals. Exactly as what happened during the 2020 protests with looters.

One of the leaders of the Proud Boys, an organization who planned the event confessed to looting property from a church and burning it the night before the riots. The people who planned the gathering did so to provide cover for their terrorism and were open on the internet about their intent. The people who came knew that and planned anyway.

That is in no way comparable to BLM. No BLM leadership was involved in looting. BLM was not providing instructions on how to loot, or releasing plans on how to loot.

Why do people link articles they don't read?

That article specifically says the decision to have the NG not carry weapons was a Pentagon decision. Bowser announced the decision she didn't make the decisionl

Some of these comments show me some White people are unwilling to let go of their privilege. You will say anything, 'but the mayor is Black,' 'I'm not seeing race,' 'They aren't terrorists.'

1. Being Black doesn't mean you can stop every atrocity, she is the mayor and has publicly said she didn't make the decision.

2. You're not seeing race? That's very problematic because race was certainly a big point. You're probably the type of person who says 'I don't see color.' Or says things akin to White being allies is equivalents to 'white guilt,' and is shameful. No sweetie, you are shameful and ignorant.

3. This certainly was terrorism, the things they did people go to PRISON for. The racism, antisemitism, the racist garb, and the acts they carried our weren't enough for you?

The people with such sentiments DO NOT care about Black or Brown lives, only the lives of those who look like them You want to keep systemic racism in tact. Whether or not you actively participate your silence is violence. Remember that next time you are talking about how great diversity is and pretending to care about all human life.

When are you people going to understand that not everything is about race?

There are a multitude of issues that would stoke the fires of these angry protestors. BTW - not unlike the PortandBaltimoreChicagoLasAngelesETC protestors over the last 10 months.

People are upset over MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY - can you HEAR ME???? - other things OTHER THAN RACE in this country. People are upset. Period. Race IS an issue, but it is not the primary issue.

Biden needs to take control and bring this country together.

White janney parent here, this was EXCLUSIVELY about race and once again I’m asking you to please share this opinion on the janney listserv with your name attached so I can avoid you and your pitiful excuses for literal nazis.

I can’t with you people. You’d be making excuses for hitler. “He’s just got economic anxiety!!!” Please make sure you vocally share this opinion on the janney listserv so I can be aware of who you are and make sure my kids don’t spend any time at your house.

You are (deliberately?) misunderstanding the point.

The principal’s talking points emphasized that the insurrectionists were “white” rather than “extremist whites.” The vast majority of whites, and certainly of the whites at Janney, are not white supremacists.

Which is a more effective is a more effective message to convey to a child
(1) “You don’t want to be part of those crazed, angry, racist law-breakers”
Or
(2) “You are part of that group of racist, awful insurrectionists”
?

Are you aiming to teach mutual respect, which is where kids at Janney are starting, or are you trying to harden division? Are you trying to teach mutual respect or shame and humiliation?

Meanwhile, despite sharing skin color, a huge difference between families at Janney and the angry, narrow-minded, and violent mob is level of education. Seems like a school could have a field day emphasizing that.

+100

Yeah all the CEOs who helped storm the capital just need more education to help see the errors of their ways! They’re just ignorant and economically anxious!

Just share this opinion publicly in the janney community with your name attached please. You shouldn’t have a problem doing that right?

Your discomfort with even a tiny amount of ideological diversity is not a virtue. You want people with slightly different political beliefs than you to feel uncomfortable in your community.

They won't do that - but they have no problem emailing Admin and teachers about their complaints. So, staff knows who they are, even if they will only post anonymously here.

White person here who totally agrees with the first PP. how can you seriously come on here screaming “it’s not about race!” when the mob was LITERALLY wearing and carrying nazi symbols? WTF kind of world do you live in where you don’t realize that fear and hatred is what motivates these people and Trump has used that to destroy our country?! Get out.
