| I understand additional prep for those who tend toward constipation, but what about people who tend toward frequent bms? Does everyone have to drink liters or gallons of laxatives? That scares me, tbh and I'm afraid I'd become dehydrated or something from the prep. Also, how in the hell can you eat a huge meal after doing a massive clean out/ not eating? I'd think some applesauce or a banana and a couple of crackers, not a feast |

NP here.
I have quite the opposite of constipation problem, so the hours of sitting on the toilet during for prep are familiar to me... (this is to address 14:55). By far, the worst is drinking ANYTHING of that massive volume. If you can keep it down while drinking, kudos to you. Also, OP, you are a champ for taking care of your body. I hope your results are all good. (I've got to schedule mine... hoping to wait until February.) |
Oddly, the prep resulted in (probably TMI) BMs that were very odd. I didn't get nauseous and didn't have the intense cramping that comes when I usually have D. Instead this was like--huge amounts of water. By the time I had completed the test it had been over 30 hours since I had last eaten any solid foods, and the laxatives had worked their way through my system so I had no cramping and no more imminent BMs. I felt pretty normal and famished. They didn't give me any guidelines of what to eat after other than a high-fiber diet. So I ate a nice big meal because I felt up to it. YMMV. |

We just got back from DH's first and they couldn't complete the procedure! It wasn't (ahem) clean enough.
WTAF??? we followed the prep instructions to the letter, nothing but broth and juice all day yesterday and oatmeal, steamed veg and potatoes the day before. He does have a history of constipation, but they never even asked. I am not super jazzed that he has to do this whole thing over again. I did read that there are other types of screenings that are not so invasive/don't require the same level of prep. Anyone have any info on that? |
Google Miralax crystal lite prep. My doctor ok’ed this for me. There is no way I could complete the regular prep. I have a crazy gag reflex. I couldn’t taste the Miralax in the crystal lite, but there much so much to drink. To the PP whose husband wasn’t clean enough, I’m so sorry! |
You are very hungry after. I had a nice omlet. Best omlet ever! |

Good advice on another prep thread that worked like a charm for me and cleaned me out with no crampy pain!
I had a colonoscopy 8 years ago and recall a laxative prep followed by a nasty drink (cannot recall). Laxative gave me cramps in addition to the swift cleanout. But according to Dr I was not fully cleaned out then but apparently almost good enough. This time I reluctantly chose the Suprep instead of 2-day Magnesium Citrate fast. I ate very little before the fast day and during fast day I drank Gatorade and chicken broth before I started. I also drank more Gatorade during the cleanse process and some water to stay very hydrated. People... Forget the Crystal Lite the TRICK is to NOT TASTE the Suprep!! Chill the water, mix and drink it slowly through a straw but AT THE BACK OF YOUR MOUTH bypassing most of your taste buds. I drank about 5 gulps at a time, sometimes with a sip or 2 of cold water (but I wasn't supposed to dilute, oops). Then i would walk around a few minutes and take 5 more gulps. Took about 20 minutes to finish the swill but it caused no stomach upset, no cramps, just a slight gas pain and bloated gurgly feeling. Another trick... I chewed my son's gumballs (white, no dyes), every time I finished a third of liquid. I was remarkably effective at nullifying and sweetening the bad taste in my mouth!! Remember to bypass those front taste buds via straw and gulp slowly! Happy cleansing! |
I'm sorry you went through that! I would ask the GI doctor who was performing it what s/he saw there - that might be a clue. They should be able to offer a different prep for the next time. There are several options. Also, not saying this caused it because who knows...but you are not supposed to have whole grains or anything fibrous starting 3 days before, also no green veggies. So oatmeal would generally be out. As would veggies, and if the potatoes had skins they would've too. Again, who knows the reasoning, the doctor could tell you more, but next time maybe try something that leans a little more high carb, and no veggies for the days just prior to the prep. |
| PP -- Also hold your nose while drinking the swill! |

OP here! I got through fine! 9 on the cleanliness scale so the suprep worked, even though it was nasty. I drank it fast with a straw; only 16 oz so it was manageable. After each dose I had about 3 hours of bathroom time, so I was able to get a decent night’s sleep.
Thanks for all the kind words and support. Here’s to another 10 years of colon health! |
What was the sedation like? |
Thanks for the update! So glad to hear you got a clean bill of health. |
I’ve been sedated twice. The first time I just had the sleep drugs and not the happy drugs. It was like being forced to fall asleep, which wasn’t as bad as I feared; then, it was like slowly waking up from the best nap ever and then going on with my day. The second time I had the happy drugs. I remember the anesthesiologist asking where I wanted to go “on vacation” and I barely remember anything past that. On waking up I was a bit more woozy because it took a while for the happy drugs to work themselves out. Next time I’ll probably ask for a half dose of the happy drugs. But neither was an unpleasant experience! |
