How is your preschooler doing with a mask all day?

If you don't want to send your kid to daycare or preschool, that's fine, but it sounds like you don't have any personal experience with sending your kid back to school with mask requirements, so why bother to comment? I used to think this way too until I sent my almost 3 year old back to daycare last month. He's better about keeping his mask over his nose than most adults, and really doesn't touch it that often. Of course they have them off when they're sleeping and eating, but the class is also very small and they're sitting and sleeping far apart.

Some families need daycare - for a myriad of reasons. And I think most daycares that have opened or have stayed opened are doing a great job. Not all of us can afford pod tutors or to leave our jobs.

Mine forgets that she's still wearing it when she gets home, so I'd say it's going fine.

+1. Our daycare has been open since July with no known cases so far. My 4yo has no trouble wearing a mask. Kids are adaptable.

If your kid’s nose is not covered, why bother with a mask? It’s not doing anything.

Dp here and my three year old routinely plays with her mask and will not leave it up over her nose for more than 60 seconds. I fully recognize it serves no purpose (other than to spread germs) but it seems to make her daycare administrators /the other parents feel better to see she’s “wearing” one, so whatever.

My kid just turned 4 and has been doing well with it. Her little friends seem like they are too — just got a picture in Tadpoles and out of the 11 kids in the class, only 2 had it below their nose. Everyone was wearing their masks.

My 4 year old's class regularly gets praised for their compliance on mask wearing and social distancing.

Our preschool does have more trouble with the younger kids.

My 4 yo wears hers no problems. Sometimes she asks for breaks. Our daycare doesn't require them outside or while napping. Our daycare has been open since June-ish. They didn't start requiring masks until the new VA state recommendations came out. No cases at all so far. Knock on wood.

Our 4 yr old is probably the best in our house about masks, he's at preschool from 9 to 1 everyday and is great about it. Zero problems and they've required since day one.

Also no problems for my 3.5 year old.

This is on you as the parent (the fit of the mask, I mean). You can absolutely alter the mask so that it fits. Tie the ear loops so they are smaller. Or shrink the mask in the laundry so that the whole thing is smaller. Some kids won’t tolerate a mask because of sensory issues. But if your kid’s mask is falling down below the most because it doesn’t fit well, then change the fit.

No problem for 4 year old to wear 10.5 hours every day mon to Friday. They take off at snack, lunch & outdoor playground time. I think they do better than many adults, except my kid has problem washing hands.

I work in a half day preschool with 4 and 5 year olds. In my class, 1/4 of the children wear the mask 100% of the time, except when we're eating snack. Another 1/4 come to school not wearing a mask at all. The other 1/2 wear their masks for a some of the time but end up taking it off and not putting it back on, usually when they are running on the playground. Peer pressure is not working in our class. We do not require the children to wear their masks and the parents know our policy.

Thanks for the tip but it’s not that it is falling down- we have tried many types and have tied the ear loops so that it will stay up properly. It’s that she will not tolerate it covering her nose/is incredibly stubborn and will manually pull it down any chance she gets. No amount urging has been successful in getting her to keep it up for more than a couple of minutes.

Hello! This is OP back again after two weeks of my 4 year old wearing a mask all day. She's doing great! I bought soft iron on labels for her mask to help her understand which side is up and which side goes towards her face (because the mask we use are the same pattern on the outside and inside). They do get a lot of breaks from mask wearing - snacks and outdoor time - so she has ample opportunities to take it off. By all accounts, it sounds like she and her classmates are doing great though. You all were right about peer pressure!
