Why are schools open tomorrow with no Metro service and Fed govt closed?

I totally understand the logic... In DC most of the kids go to neighborhood schools and can walk to school! Rather than in the Burbs and rural areas where they rely more on cars and the school bus (which is likely unsafe). A lot of the government workers draw from areas way outside of the district and it would be more dangerous to have them drive in.

I am glad that my child has school tomorrow.. also, think of the kids that get 2 our of their 3 meals a day for free trough public schools.
they'll get free meals in the hospital when a vehicle hits them....
the sidewalks aren't passable yet, when you have to cross the road....

I've noticed all the DC public charter schools are closed tomorrow.

That would be a disadvantage to your location.

Ordinarily it's really not... in fact it not having a metro here adds to its appeal for me and many of my neighbors. In a snowpocalypse like this (once every 10 years), yes, it is a disadvantage.

It's simple... Wards 3, 4 and 6 were plowed.

look on dcps website for additional note about tomorrow's delay. It says that it is ultimately up to the parents whether or not they send a child to school . . . why can't they just make it simple and close schools.

I live in Ward 3 and there were no plows on my street whatsoever.

I knew this was her plan. Another PR stunt about the urgency of their mission. Educating the children is a top priority, sure, but shouldn't safety and respect be priorities as well?

I have been a supporter and apologist of her all this time but this is just ridiculous! In this circumstance I can't agree with her decision. She is compromising the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

terrible decision, and one of many voters will not forget. shows fenty's lack of understanding of what actually happens in this city--obama already thinks fenty is a village idiot, but fenty still tried to impress him with stunts like this. the FED gov't closed, fenty. wake up! you are putting people's lives in danger!

id like to see fenty and rhee walk to work tomorrow. oh...what? they have drivers and SUVs?

latest dcps email. you all would complain no matter what she did. just stop complaining please.

FOR MONDAY, FEB 8, 2010

All DC Public Schools will open 2 hours late. All DCPS administrative offices will open 1 hour late.

NOTE: At DCPS, it is our job to keep schools open and operating so that our children can keep on learning. The city has worked hard to clear school areas and sidewalks in order to make this possible. Parents, however, make the ultimate decision about sending a child to school. If you are concerned about the aftermath of the storm, and choose not to send your child to school on Monday, we will work with schools to ensure that students are not penalized for this absence.
