That would be my first guess.

OP, what Christian sect has a clothing requirement like that?

Fundamentalist Mormons

Some Mennonites

Some Evangelicals

Some Pentecostals

Some Baptists

Evangelicals and Baptist’s don’t dress like that.

Pentecostals. My former boss was a Pentecostal and the denim skirt is the casual uniform. Did they have Pentecostal hair? https://i.pinimg.com/564x/56/08/a0/5608a08cb211c76ba8ca3c61820f4cc1.jpg

The long demon skirts are very unattractive. That is the purpose. Heavier fabric also hides more?

But wouldn’t they be either at synagogue or at home today?

I think you can walk and go to the park as long as you don’t drive there

Depending on how strict they are, they can do it as long as they are within their local eruv.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruv

What city were you in? In the DMV area, I think they are much more likely to be orthodox Jews than fundamental Christians.

This is wrong. The eruv does not allow you to drive on shabbat or a holiday. All the eruv does is allow for carrying things, like pushing a stroller or carrying a bag. If they were driving in a Saturday they were not Jewish.

A lot of Baptists do, my strict southern Baptist family does. The women can't wear pants (it's a sin for a woman to wear men's clothing), and a lot of them wear long denim skirts. No dancing allowed either (it's a pagan celebration), among other things. I left that crap.

As well as ultra orthodox Jewish right wing nutters.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews do not wear denim. Modern Orthodox, yes, but not further to the right. It is seen as too casual.

Generally yes, but in smaller ultra Orthodox communities there are ultra Orthodox women who wear denim skirts. They don't, however, usually wear ankle length. It would most likely be a pencil denim skirt.

I will never forget the big 1979 snowstorm here in DC. Our conservative Baptist neighbors were out playing with the rest of us, and the daughter still had to wear a (denim) skirt in two feet of snow.

IN my experience - Pentecostals (atleast the Black female ones) love a good denim skirt, no makeup and an updo. I went to a nondenominational church as a young adult that had many ladies who were married to men at the nondenominational church but were still attached to the Pentecostal beliefs and attire.

This is not typical of Southern Baptists. I also grew up in a Southern Baptist family.

They do tend to frown on dancing, but because of concerns about physical closeness/sexuality not paganism.

Nothing sinful about women wearing pants. More traditional women may be more likely ro wear skirts/dresses to the more formal Sunday morning services, but that's because they want to look especially nice as a matter of respect. (They'll probably go home and change into jeans). Some women will dress in slacks to Sunday morning service, especially when it's cold. These days, you're liable to find some women (especially younger ones) wearing jeans. I think most churches would rather have you come whatever you're wearing (hopefully not shockingly immodest, vulgar, etc.), although you might get a few frowns from older members. Some congregations and geographic areas may be more formal or casual depending on local fashions.

Yes, and my first guess is oneness/apostolic pentecostals. Did they have extra long hair, OP?

yes, my thought too. I roomed with an Apostolic Pentecostal in college (weirdly, a Catholic college) and a long denim skirt with a modest blouse or sweatshirt on top was her daily 'fit. She also had very long, waist-length hair. She was not able to cut it.
