Jogging and weight loss

I'm an avid runner- mostly short dlstances but I run to win. So I normally run 5k or 10k but consistently place in the top 3 for age/gender and in the top 10 overall. I say this for context- I go all out when I run.

But when I gain a couple pounds and want to lose weight, I add walks and not runs. I will walk 7-10 miles per day. It works for me. I've never been able to lose weight just by running more, probably in part because there's really only so much more you can safely run without injury.

That’s interesting. I’m the same kind of runner you are; in my area I can win races, I am more of a mile and 5K gal. But as I’ve gotten into my 40’s I have these 5-7 pounds I can’t seem to take off. I have a treadmill but still mostly run outside; maybe I’ll start adding in an extra walk per day.

Was this more of a power walk or a stroll?

Do you not have a job or children, by chance?

I’m trying to picture my life if I added 70 miles a week walking (a 13 minute mile at best) on top of existing runs.

I can’t picture this unless I returned in a kid or slept 4 hours a day

This is me. Oops, I meant 1 hour 15 minutes for 4 miles. I feel sweaty and great. Going out now while it's a little windy and maybe less sweaty!

I have both children and a job. I get the mileage in by 1) walking over lunch- can usually get 3 miles this way, and then 2) walking or running while my kids are in evening and early morning sports. For example, I take my kid to swim at 430am and walk or run til she is done at 6. So I can workout in the morning, at lunch at work, and in the evening during sports time.

My personal experience with this was ultimately, running more backfired. Increasing my mileage seriously increased hunger. So restricting intake was even more difficult.

Then I was sidelined from running for 2 years due to overuse injury.

you can lose weight if you walk too. You have to walk briskly and with purpose.

+1 Walking keeps your heart rate in the fat burning zone. Running and even jogging can push you into the cardiovascular zone, which is good if that's your goal (conditioning). But the OP is looking for fat loss, so fast walking (not strolling with intermittent stops) for 20+ minutes every day will do the trick - combined with lower carbs and higher protein intake.

+2. I put on 10 pounds in my late 30s and tried getting back into jogging, but the scale would not budge. I switched to walking and light weight training and the weight came right off. My HRM indicated I burned nearly twice as many calories from fat walking than I did by running.

This isi similar to what i do. I have posted this before somewhere: During the day at I: walk during my 15 minute morning break, then during my 30 minute lunch, then my 15 minute afternoon break. This could be any combination of outside walking, or hallways walking, or stairs walking, depending on the weather and my mood. I don;t always keep stats like calories or steps; I just go by time. Keep moving! I feel and look great. On weekends I take a break from walking (unless we go hiking as a family) and take 1-2 yoga classes. I have very light dumbbells at home and do those the same days as I walk (weekdays). They only take 15-20 minutes and often I do them while I am waiting for the pasta water to boil, or watching TV, etc. Soooo easy to fit it in !

I lost my college 15 lbs by running. But I only ran 3 miles about 5x per week. I watched what I ate as well but I was able to still go out for dinners, drink with friends, etc and the running kept the weight off. I'm 55 now and exercise a lot but can't run distance anymore- I am about 10lbs overweight which I'm o.k. with.
