In the professional sphere, I think you tend to see more mid- and short-length hair than long hair on women. Especially as women get older and take on more responsibility (and grow grey). Coloring your hair when it's long is a pain in the a-r-s-e, because getting a consistent color is tough... and it doesn't look as believable.
And for me, with wispy fine hair, short is the only way to go. Much longer than below my chin, and I start to look very straggly and scrappy. |
| I just cut my hair off again. My husband always loves it short - go figure - says I look gamine. But your dad's comment made me smile, because now that it is short, I have to style it every single day - much more time consuming. |

OP - First impressions? "She's given up!" |
| I like it on other women, but not on me. I love my long wavy locks. |
They are all hot
Of course I have short hair, so I am biased. Personally, I went from long hair to medium length hair to short-short hair. I looked way worse with medium length hair as I never had time to do it or even when I did - it was instantly messed up and looked freaky very easily. I looked like crap. Long hair can at least be shoved in a ponytail. With a good short cut, I look OK to good all the time (for me, not saying I am hot). I wear a hat, it puffs up a little and goes back into place within minutes. Mys on dumps sand on it, I just dust it off. To "dress it up", I bring out the hair products. And I have certainly seen some women who make the short cut look darn good. Now, I will admit, one thing that makes it a little less "easy" is that I do feel the need to wear make-up more often and spend more time picking out the "right" earrings (on workdays, for days at home I just wear small, less easier for my child to pull-on earrings). |
Interesting, my thought would be the opposite of your dad's - women with short hair have to keep up with it a lot more than women with longer hair do. I've had short hair once in my life, and in addition to not suiting me, I was amazed at how frequently I needed to get it trimmed. If a short cut appeals to you and suits you, go for it! |

The women I know with very short hair fall primarily into two camps: 1) women who've always known that they look best in short hair -- the gamine type; or 2) women who cut their hair short in their 40s or 50s, possibly/probably in the belief that their age requires them to do so. If you look at women in this second group, many, many of them look great with their new short styles. Suddenly, you notice their eyes, eyebrows, cheekbones, and lips. Nearly all of these women either start wearing makeup or start wearing shades that are more flattering and contemporary, applying them in a more aftful way. Often, too. these newly shorn women begin to wear jewelery that's more interesting and that reflects a more individual sense of style. It's ironic that while these women might have cut their hair because they've been conditioned to think that long hair is a sign of youth, they end up looking more vibrant, sexy and confident. One example to consider in this vein is Katie Couric, who wore her hair short in the early '90s, then grew it out until it started looking a little too "Despearate Housewives" (the heavy eyeliner and frosted lipstick didn't help), then went to a blah bob for a while, and now has come full circle with a short, boyish and sexy cut that looks more hip.
Now that I've put in my 2 cents worth of fashion advice, OP, I think your dad's statement was not only off-base objectively, but, more important, was insensitive and thoughtless. As much as I'm sure you love your dad, you need to ignore his careless and hurtful advice and do what you think is best. You're definitely not his little girl anymore. |

A woman I work with has short-short hair and she looks STUNNING. She lost all her hair to cancer treatments, actually, and what grew back stayed very short.
I recently saw a picture of her taken 10 years earlier, and her hair was shouder length or longer. Still very pretty, but not as stunning... With almost no hair, you can't help but notice she's gorgeous. My aunt, less gorgeous, but when she lost her hair to cancer and it grew back very short (an inch or so) I also thought: My god, she's beautiful. In her case, she could no longer perm her hair into old-lady 'do. Instead, she had this very mod, ballsy, confident look. Her husband, an old-school dude, also indicated that with her new look she appeared 15 years younger (I would have said 25!) and thought her more sexy than ever! |
Me too. |
Really? You know not everyone looks good with long hair, right? No one length suits anyone. |
| I would love a chic short haircut. Every time I do it I grow my hair back because I end up with "mushroom head." My hair is just too wavy and frizzy and I need the weight of longer hair. Also, I have a round face. Have contemplated getting Brazilian straightening to pull off a short cut and bid farewell to the hairdryer. |
| After my third child I chopped all my hair into a Natalie-Portman-like short cut and I loved it. Made me feel more professional, wore makeup and always looked put together. Now it's shoulder length (husband said he really prefers it longer) and I feel so mousey and look like I have given up. Ends up in a ponytail by 3:00. |
Ummm, in certain professions, yes. But not in any glamorous professions. Those women have longer hair or short cute shoulder-length bobs (think Anna Wintour) Grey? How old are you????????? |
| Many women choose shorter hair as they age not because of some cultural association of long hair with youth but because long hair visually emphases sagging skin. I'm almost 43, very trim, and people often think I'm much younger than I am. But, my eyelids are a little heavier than they used to be, and I'm starting to develop those frown lines on the sides of my mouth, both of which were far more prominent when my hair was longer. I cut it chin length last year and it took five years off my face. (And the Retin-A since then has also helped!) |
| I read an article somewhere once that said women with uber short hair were trying to send a message to men to back off. I thought the article was full of hooey. |
