I'd be turned off by a man who did this.

Same. And I'm in my 50s. I wonder what teen girls think of this today....

I would see it as a sign of kindness, consideration and respect.

Me too, people who don't hold the door for those next to them are my.pet peeve. Gender aside. Maybe he wouldn't go open a car door for a buddy but maybe he would, and likely he would hold all other doors. That's good manners.

Holding a door and opening a door are two completely different things.

I know what you mean but I would not be surprised at all if 16 year olds think that it's funny that we are even discussing this as "a thing". They have plenty of larger issues to worry about than this sort of antiquated, and irrelevant practice.they are highly unlikely to get offended or turned off , nor think it's a wonderful thing. It's just a non-issue for them

Np: how difficult some of your lives must be if you’re always looking for ways to be offended.

You could think of it that way. Or you could see it for what it is...that it’s just one little manifestation of a much larger problem.

Why can’t people be nice without it being turned into a sexist act of disrespect.

Early on most of my dates do this. This is not the norm during a relationship but most men step it up for special events. Why is it so wroing to be respectful to women or the elderly
and demonstrate manners?

Some of us are still of the belief that we can change people's views so that women are seen as capable and equal to men. I realize there are many out there who think or feel themselves that women should be taken care of, seen as in need of a man's help, they love the knight in shining armor, or the guy who treats them like a princess, or the idea of a man looking after them, or the man who provides and protects and keeps them safe etc. However those views make it difficult for women to move into positions of power or into leadership and management roles or to be taken seriously in senior positions.

Being too nice is sometimes the issue. It isn't that the guy is being is meaning to be sexist, he has been taught that women / girls need him to act this way because he is stronger or more capable and they are weaker and less able. The guy thinks he is doing a nice thing, helping the woman / girl out. The intentions are good but they reinforce a very sexist message to both the girl and the guy. If it is a gesture that is just nice and kind and not sexist then it should be done the same for men and women and by men and women.

Exhibit A as to why I loathe feminism.

I'm a lesbian and my female partner opens doors for me.

Should I be offended?

You’re a bitter single woman aren’t you?

Not offended. It's just Op thinks she's living in the 1950's.

Common courtesy is always in style. But that's not what Op is talking about.

No I don’t need doors opened for me. But I sure do appreciate it. Love when my husband does it.

Not offended. Do you also open her car door? How does that work or is it just something she does for you. If you get to the car first, do you just stand and wait for her to come and open the door? If you are going somewhere without her does she come out to open your car door for you? Curious as to how this all works.
