Top 10 college chances

I have a white TJ kid and you need to get off the Asian cross. Kids with B+ in math classes below BC Calc were told by VT they might have tough time getting into VT Engineering this year. It’s tough all over for college admissions. Plenty of 4.4-4.5 white kids getting rejected from the top 10s too. High performing UMC white kids are a dime and dozen in the DMV, and they aren’t taking your DC’s Harvard slot. There are just 100 exceptional kids for every Harvard slot.

Now, any given graduating class at TJ is 1-2% URM and 1-2% FARMs. A top 10% first gen, AA or Hispanic TJ kid could write their own ticket. Because they are unicorns. But that’s not what you meant, is it?

We were told the same about five years ago. Minimum GPA of 4.0 for applying to engineering and they want to see Calculus BC finished with an A before you apply. VT was ED then, so they advised not to apply ED if Calculus BC was not yet finished (which meant finished by end of Jr. year or summer college course).

The 75th percentile for median GPA was a 4.49 for UVA for entering students (not those accepted, which is a higher figure, but those who actually showed up) for fall 2019. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. Even the median 50th percentile for entering students is higher than a 4.30.

Two thirds has. First, UVA is more forgiving on GPA for TJ. They know the drill and about grade deflation, and that things like AP Wprld History and first year AP CS and AP Physics below C aren’t an option. So, TJ has a lower GPA requirement. Plus, they don’t weight DT, PE, Langauage. It’s hard to get more than one AP in sophomore year— because again, no AP into Cs. No AP WH. You are looking at graduating GPAs. General rule of thing at TJ is+.1 for each of senior and and junior years, maybe a bit less, if you stay on your trajectory. The 4.3 kid probably graduates with a 4.45.

I doubt VT "told" them this.

I call BS. Sounds like hearsay, or an urban legend. I doubt it came from the admissions office.

Thought the entire point of TJ WAS to go to a top 10 college!! Especially MIT and Stanford

The point is to get a better education by being surrounded by smart, interested students TJ admission generally doesn't help with college admissions.

All the parents I know think TJ will both give their child a better education and get their child into a better college. They don't consider that most kids at TJ have to be in the bottom 90 percent of the class. Not getting into a top ten won't doom a student, so I don't think the misperception really matters in the long run.

Were you in the room when the admissions Rep came to TJ? My DD was.

The admissions rep who visited the school. You might have noticed they are a bit overenrolled right now? It’s going to affect 2020 admissions.

Further evidence that virtually any college thread ends up discussing “Asians”, UVA, and affirmative action.

There is always this escape hatch: William and Mary loves it some TJ grads and its grad school placements are excellent.

Any admin rep that tells a room full of students that they need to make a specific grade in one particular class, or else they won’t be admitted (without taking any other factors into consideration), is full of crap and should be reprimanded.

DOOmed. Ivyes have tons of “perfect” applicants from which to choose. They reject “perfect” applicants, too. Hghlight extracurriculars, outside interests to say your student is not a typical bookworm, has a life outside classrooms.
