tell me about starvation mode

This sounds awful to me. So much time thinking about what you weigh and eat. I’ve gained weight as I got older but I enjoy meals and am happy. Could you just reset your goal or expectations for yourself?

Sure, but where do you draw the limit? What if your weight is causing you health issues? How much extra weight is acceptable when you grow older? What if you have a history of heart disease in your family or diabetes? Diabetes, high cholesterol are identified as causes of vassal dementia. How do you determine what is acceptable weight gain older you get? Do you take into account the difficulty that your loved ones will have taking care of you if you can't do it for yourself, and how being overweight might make that care even more difficult for them and for you?

OP, I think you need to find a healthy balance- or accept you will always be starving.

At 5'6" you can afford to gain some weight and still be in a healthy range. If you started eating 1500 calories per day, I really don't think you'd gain tons of weight. Maybe 5 lbs as your body adjusts and then you would probably stay there. Could you be happy at 140 if you had more freedom to eat more and indulge more often?

Starvation mode is a myth and it doesn’t exist. When you drop your calories that low you are naturally and subconsciously moving less throughout the day to conserve energy. Many of us burn calories through NEAT- the natural calorie burning process of just moving around throughout the day. You are lowering your NEAT because you aren’t fueled properly and your body is conserving energy and you’re moving less. You’re eating less but burning less too.

Eat a little more, move a little more, increase NEAT, and your weight will likely go down.

Op here. Thank you everyone for the comments. From this thread I am already - tracking even more closely my food at lease to determine if I’m miscounting, lifting more weights, boosting metabolism, and most importantly going to try and get comfortable that I might just need to be 135-140 pounds and that’s ok.

Starvation mode is kind of a myth. Even in cases of extreme anorexia, they do keep losing weight. The metabolism slows but not by a huge amount. 1100/day is anorexia/hospitalization/heart failure territory. So you’re either miscalculating or there is something you’re not sharing with us. Are you maybe binging a lot?

This was my thought too. 1100 calories every day for 15 yrs is not sustainable/easy to stick to and if OP really was sticking to that she would be very thin. Not 135 lbs.

Oh ffs. 135 at 5’6” isn’t fat.

No one said 135 was fat. but if someone was really only eating 1100 cal/day for 15 yrs they would not weight 135 lbs. They would actually be very underweight and probably under 100 lbs.

Well, I am not eating today. At all, I ate like a little piggy all day yesterday! The amount of food I chowed down was insane. Healthy, homemade, just so much. So, I am not eating today, till tomorrow morning. Nothing, but coffee and sparkling water. I am walking and working, and I am not hungry. I am pretty sure it would take me days if not weeks to get into starvation mode and I am not even overweight. Nor am I hungry today, but it is only 1pm, who know how the day goes... Best intentions and all, right?

I agree. I eat around 1000-1200 for decades and have been always 110-115lbs.

Thanks- my default I sort of do since i don't eat breakfast and eat dinner around 7. Again, i'm looking to see if I should be introducing more meals/snacks, not taking them away. but i don't want to gain weight obviously.

Fast for 24-48 hours once a week. Sounds like you're only doing the pop culture version of IF. That's not the real deal.
