Family members in Guatemala ask me for money

Anonymous
What part of Guatemala?

Are we related?
Anonymous
Keep saying no. Do not feel the need to justify or explain.

That's exactly what Jesus preached.

Is Jesus going to come pay OP's bills when she needs it?

Is this a question of not being able to pay bills or not having sufficient discretionary income?

Doesn't matter. OP is not obliged to give if she doesn't want to.

No one is obliged to give, but some of us live by a different moral code to care for family and those in need.

You do you and drop the sanctimony.

Yes, I will do me and be a better person than you.

Fellow Guatemalan again: "Perdon, pero no les puedo mandar dinero." or "No los puedo ayudar." over and over again if you need to. They are not really family if they are just reaching out when they want money. They see your mom is an ATM and hope you will be one too.

Nope. I would temporarily support a relative going through a significant life event to help cover their essentials. That’s it.

Or give the $ to your mom (who isn't asking for it), and tell her to give it to family members who are truly in need.

My mom is an ATM machine for all her nieces and nephews and has been for years. They ask ask ask. I really don’t want to send any. I said no. I feel bad but my cousin is a cop and I have no idea why he can’t pay it.

Then no. If your mom is a donor, then let her be the arbiter of need. You just stick to no.

Block them?
Good, you're an asshole.

They are assholes for only contacting OP when they want money.

At this rate, OP will be supporting her mother in her old age. Just ignore the requests.

BTW, do they *really* need the money or are just used to asking a US family member for money? (This is hard for Americans to understand, but this is very common. It's not that they are really in need.)

+1

Your mom is on the scene, as it were, and if she's saying no, then I'd agree. Maybe ask your mom if the request is legitimate. Yes, there is terrible poverty in Guatemala, but not everyone who lives there is poor.

The only one trying to control others is your attempt to curb the free speech on this forum. Sorry that my generosity of spirit makes you feel so defensive.

+1 It's funny how some people feel personally offended when other people are more giving. People live their lives in different ways.

Troll.

op I know you’re not ignorant to the fact that most of Guatemala illegally comes to the USA for unskilled cash labor jobs and collectively remits billions a year to their families in Guatemala for chain migration, private schools or new houses there.

Your cousins probably think— like most people outside of America- that you are rich and loaded and have tons of money to remit back to them all. They see their buddies getting cash western union wires and want a piece.

I wouldn’t do it but see how crazy they mistreat you.
