MCPS also tries to balance this out.
I think you're right - gender IS known to the reviewers, to make sure Takoma isn't all male and Eastern all female.
It’s pretty sexist to think one school would end up with only one sex without outside interference. How can that be possible?
No assumptions being made. MCPS said they needed to balance gender.
You realize that's illegal?
Really? When DC was in the magnet at TPMS, it was acknowledged that they tried to get more girls. We were told the admission process was completely "blind" w.r.t. everything else - race/home school/etc. I do not know if this has changed with the new admissions process.
And you really believe that?
Yes, it’s also illegal to use race for this. I’m aware some angry parents whose kids were rejected have dreamed up all sorts of kooky scenarios. However, if you have any real evidence as opposed to unprovable hunches please share it.
PP you replied to. I just want to see a thorough investigation. I have heard enough anecdotes from close friends who have detailed their child's scores as well as their classmates', to know that some Asian students had better scores overall than non-Asians (same year, same school comparison), and the Asian students were not accepted whereas the others were. That's for the magnet middle schools. I also know this also goes on at the CES level, when friends told me their children's scores and I found out who had gotten in and who hadn't. I have no way of knowing what's going on, since these are anecdotes, not scientifically accumulated data. However, with what friends have confided in me for the past several years (up to 5 years ago)... the pattern is starting to disturb me .
