If you had a 2-mile commute

Anonymous
I have a 2 mile commute and drive or bike. Driving takes me 10 minutes and biking around 15-20 minutes. I never walk. For me the point of the short commute is that I can get there quickly and commuting doesn't cost me work or family time.

I can't walk or bike because there aren't side walks and I'd have to cross a highway. I also have to do daycare pickup, so I assume you bikers aren't doing daycare pick up or drop off or have older kids.

Wow, that sucks. It really says something bad about our choices as a society if you can't bike because of what we built for cars.

I had a two mile walking commute, I would pick up my daughter from daycare at mile 1 and then walk her home in her stroller (stored at the daycare). I didn't have sidewalk/highway issues though-sounds frustrating.

PP here. I'm between Loudoun and Fairfax county. There are excellent trails on both sides, but they don't connect. We've been asking FFX to connect us to the W&OD for years, but they won't because it doesn't benefit their residents. And Loudoun isn't going to build us sidewalks in a different county.

I don't feel comfortable with my toddler and 6 month old in a bike carrier on the road. Sidewalks only until they're older.

I'm sure you're in great health, both physical and mental. You're probably also really fun to be around.

+1 Post your BMI.

I am actually in excellent health. I did take car cause walking is selfish. My wife for most of that 20 years had kids at home. To walk ment leaving 10-15 minutes earlier and coming late and sticking her with the extra work of getting kids up and out door and dealing with dinner. Also if wife texted me to get milk, go to drugstore, heck Friday get pizza with car I could run errand and not first go home.

As I drive and see folks walking and biking I think how lazy of them. They could be helping spouse, parents, in-laws, doing charity work, maintaining house, going to church all sorts of productive things, instead they dress up like idiots in bright yellow on 1,000 bikes and block traffic. Only saving grace is Darwins law and they will eventually crash

That's terrible - you are somewhere in Sterling I guess? Need to cross Herndon Parkway?

For advocacy, I suggest contacting Washington Area Bike Association (WABA). Unlike Fairfax Alliance for Better Biking (FABB) they are multijurisdictional. Though they don't know the outer suburbs at all well, so don't get your hopes up.

For route advice try the Washington Area Bike Forum. If anyone can find a comfortable route for you, they can.

hi troll.

In fact most people who drive don't use their extra time for all those good things (though not sure fixing up your house is unselfish). They spend time watching TV or arguing on line. And of course lots of people who walk and bike do charity work, and even walk and bike to church. Plus they save time and money on going to the gym.

Is your daycare on the way, or do you actually live closer to your work, but daycare makes it a 2 miles commute?

This is my commute. If I didn’t have to take my daughter to daycare first in the opposite direction, I’d bike.

I have a 2 mile commute and I drive. Why? Because I don't want to freeze in the winter nor do I want to show up sweaty and disgusting in the summer. Plus it's nice and saves me a lot of money being able to hop in the car and nip home on my lunch hour.

I was going to say something about biking slowly, but if you get sweaty walking then I guess even slow biking wouldn't work. Personally I would hate huddling away from the elements half the year, but we are all different I guess.

2 miles is nothing. Our winters aren't that cold, and if you're walking, you're generating some bodily heat. In the summer... do you commute in the middle of the afternoon? Or are you like most people, where you head out in the morning, return in the evening, when there's plenty of shade? If so, you're not going to end up that sweaty and disgusting.

It's people like OP and pp that probably wonder... "how do you guys get 10k+ step a day?!"

It's really very easy if you try.

I'm the poster you quoted. I'm well aware, I just don't care.

Daycare is 3 miles away. We are sort of a triangle. I have a 7 minute commute to work (dh does drop off) and a 15 minute commute home.

My dad had a commute like this for years and got a moped.
