If you had a 2-mile commute

Are you alone or are kids with you?

I have a 2 mile commute and I drive. Why? Because I don't want to freeze in the winter nor do I want to show up sweaty and disgusting in the summer. Plus it's nice and saves me a lot of money being able to hop in the car and nip home on my lunch hour.]

I can't walk or bike because there aren't side walks and I'd have to cross a highway. I also have to do daycare pickup, so I assume you bikers aren't doing daycare pick up or drop off or have older kids.

I am not doing day care pickup, but I know people who do - using a variety of approaches from Burley trailers to having the kids ride along, depending on age. At two miles that would be doable, but not of course if the road conditions make it impossible, which sounds like your case. (also bike parking at work has to accommodate the trailer, which is not the case everywhere)

I really love my vespa. It's fun and quick for just zipping around a few miles.

I was going to say something about biking slowly, but if you get sweaty walking then I guess even slow biking wouldn't work. Personally I would hate huddling away from the elements half the year, but we are all different I guess.

I have a 7 mile commute, and it's still bike. Yes, I drive most days, but on days with decent weather (or when I don't have to rush home to drive kids to ECs), I still bike.

Teleport, duh.

I had a 3/4 mile commute for 20 years and drove my BMW 5 Series or my Caddie. Walking is for hobos

I'm sure you're in great health, both physical and mental. You're probably also really fun to be around.

2 miles is nothing. Our winters aren't that cold, and if you're walking, you're generating some bodily heat. In the summer... do you commute in the middle of the afternoon? Or are you like most people, where you head out in the morning, return in the evening, when there's plenty of shade? If so, you're not going to end up that sweaty and disgusting.

It's people like OP and pp that probably wonder... "how do you guys get 10k+ step a day?!"

It's really very easy if you try.

Wow, that sucks. It really says something bad about our choices as a society if you can't bike because of what we built for cars.

I am the PP just before you. I bike commute 10 miles each way, most days, all winter and all summer (I have shower access at work, I assume OP does not) (I do take metro when its 20 degrees out with high winds - I hate riding into a 20MPH headwind). But I think gentle encouragement works better for the sedentary than outright shaming.
