What is a reasonable curfew for backyard basketball (neighbors bothered by bouncing ball)

This.
There's no way it allows for 11 pm noise, no way.
My guess is 9 pm is the latest hour.

You think the law says everybody has to be silent after 11pm.

No one said silent, so drop the . But people have an expectation of reasonable quiet at night. The noise ordinance time seems like a common sense cutoff time for basketball noise close to other houses.

I understand that it’s very annoying but You need to go buy whatever your local noise ordinance is.

We have the 8 PM rule for basketball at our house as do most neighbors. Why? Because many younger kids are in bed at 8 and that's when most others are settling down to unwind and watch TV. No one wants to hear thump, thump, thump constantly.

We do extend it to 9 PM on Fridays during the summer but only on Fridays. Again, no one wants to hear the constant thumping.

One of the boys in the neighborhood got a light up ball a few years ago and that's become a neighborhood favorite. Lots of playing with that after they aren't allowed to shoot hoops.

^^Also, I wanted to add our town has a noise ordinance that states no loud noises/music outdoors after 8 pm without a special permit. This is pushed to midnight on Friday & Saturday and no permit is needed.

I would love if my neighbor stopped at 8.

At 9 I'm slightly annoyed, but realize that I wind down earlier than others (have to be at work at 7am).

At 10 I truly think they need to stop.

Agree.

Also agree.

Pull up your county noise ordinance. That is a nuisance noise. In Arlington you can call the cops at 10pm.

We have a court in our neighborhood and the lights automatically go out at 10 pm. I still think that's late, but no way is 11 pm at all reasonable in any circumstance.

I vote for ending by 8 pm during the school year and maybe letting it go a little later in the summer. If I had littles and lived near you, I'd probably hate you.

Kudos to you for asking. I had neighbors in the first house I owned put up a non-allowed hoop in their driveway. Dh and I approached them several times about their play that continued up until 11 or 12pm most nights. We had 2 under 2 years of age. Our houses were very close to one another. They regularly hit our house and it was impossible for anyone to sleep while they were playing. They were some of the nastiest, vile neighbors I've ever experienced. Thanks for not being like them.

My kids play a ton of basketball. There is no way that 11 pm is appropriate. 9 pm at the latest.

11 is fine.

You, sir or madam, are an asshole. An entitled one at that.

The neighbor who is whining about kids playing basketball is the entitled asshole.

10pm Sunday to Thursday, and 11pm Friday and Saturday, and that is if the noise can be heard inside with the doors and windows shut.

Anonymous wrote:You guys are generous; I was going to say 7-8 because NO ONE wants to hear thump thump thump endlessly all day and late into the evening. It’s crazy making and more so when you’re trying to unwind after the work day and gear up to face the grind again the next day. 8 pm OP or thy can go to a park that’s designed for that.

This, we had this situation and it was a nightmare. We have much younger kids so they'd have parties right up against our bedrooms and we hear the thumping 1/2 the night. My kids were up till 11-12 as they had to wait till exhaustion kicked in.
