PK3 lottery - Lincoln Park area

We turned down waitlist offers at both Appletree OK Avenue and Appletree Lincoln Park and are glad we did so. We love our child's teachers and overall experience and have met wonderful families as well. If commute is important I'd definitely prioritize that with the knowledge you'll be in Maury for K, and none of the schools you listed will deliver a "bad" PreK experience. Note that if you really want Maury then you still need to list it as your #1 choice. Otherwise there's no way you'll get in, even with IB preference.

that's great to hear about Miner! Will you be headed to Maury for K?

We are also very happy with PK3 at Miner. We will head to one of Brent/Maury/L-T for K, but the ECE program at Miner has surpassed our expectations. (We actually got off of the waiting list for two schools in late September and turned them down, which I never would have guessed in advance that we would do.)

Is Maury going to have more PK capacity than it used to in the new building?

Is Maury using the swing space for one more year or two? If it’s two, I think putting Appletree LP higher wouldn’t be a bad choice.

DCPS Early Action PK program

A PK3 or PK4 student is guaranteed a seat at a designated DCPS “Early Action” school as long as they meet the following three conditions:

The Early Action school is the student’s in-boundary school,
The student submits a My School DC lottery application by the March 1 deadline, and
The student is not matched with a school they rank higher than their Early Action school.

Do we know which schools are Early Action for this coming year?

Participating DCPS schools in school year 2019-20 are:

Aiton Elementary School
Amidon-Bowen Elementary School
Browne Elementary School
Bunker Hill Elementary School
Burroughs Elementary School
Drew Elementary School
King Elementary School
Langley Elementary School
Miner Elementary School
Moten Elementary School
Noyes Elementary School
Stanton Elementary School
Takoma Education Campus
Thomson Elementary School
Truesdell Education Campus
Turner Elementary School
Wheatley Education Campus

Where did you get that list? Compared to 18-19, it removes Payne and Langdon. Wonder why the removals--did they think they wouldn't have enough room?

Probably in past years they were nowhere near maxing out their existing capacity but now they are too close for comfort. Some schools would be able to add a room, but others not.

It was buried on the key terms page.

Really? That's amazing news. It doesn't look it could be ready by then. They must have plans to fast track.

I read about SWS and I like it! But at the same time, I would be totally happy to get into Maury.

If I got into SWS or Maury, I would definitely send DC there. For all the rest on the list, I would be weighing them against leaving him in his day care preschool, which is $$, but convenient and good. I'm planning to go to the open houses so I can get a better idea.

If I ranked SWS as #1 and Maury as #2, would I be actually hurting my chances of getting into Maury?

You do not hurt your chances of getting into Maury by having it at #2 as opposed to #1. That is not how the lottery works. Everyone is given a master number, and when it's your turn, they go down your list in order of preference from #1 to #12 to see which school has spots. You'll be matched with the first school on your list that has a spot.

The PP is pretty much right, but just to be 100% accurate: the odds of “missing out” on Maury and being matched at a school you ranked below Maury is the same whether you list Maury #1 or SWS #1/Maury #2. If you list SWS as #1, your odds of getting into Maury are slightly smaller (compared to listing Maury #1), but only because you’ve “added” the possibility that you will get into SWS instead of Maury. So between those two schools, rank whichever you prefer as #1.

Another lottery question: how does inbound preference work?

Re: IB preference:

It means you get a chance at being matched at your inbound school (even if you rank it #12) before people with lower (i.e. better) master lottery numbers than you who do NOT have inbound preference (even if they rank it #1).

Adding that this is how the My School DC website explains it:

"Students that qualify for a preference at a particular school are offered space at that school before students who don’t have a preference, or receive a higher waitlist placement than students without a preference.... How you rank a school does not impact whether you are eligible for a preference at that school." (From the FAQs for "What are Lottery Preferences?": http://www.myschooldc.org/faq/faqs)

Just want to add that we’re another Miner ECE family, IB for Maury. We are very, very happy with the school and highly recommend it.

But not happy enough to stay?

OP here. I think I have decided on this:

1) Maury
2) SWS
3) Peabody
4) Miner
5) Appletree LP

You have zero percent chance of getting into Peabody OOB.

You have a good chance of not getting into anything with this list. I would add something like AT Oklahoma Ave if you want to have something that you'll be more likely to get into. You can always turn it down if you don't like it enough. It's not much farther than Miner. Also maybe JO Wilson if it's not too far away for you?

So
1-Maury
2-SWS
3-Miner
4-AT LP
5-JO Wilson
6-AT Okl Ave
