Hey, I wanted to check for some feedback as I'm thinking about PK3 lottery. How many schools do I get to put on my list?
IB is Maury, and ideally I want that because 1) Best for my commute and 2) Good reputation 3) I'd prefer not to switch between PK and K. Here are the other schools that I might reasonably walk to. AppleTree Lincoln Park Peabody Miner School Within School Goding Center City PCS How would you rank the above? I don't know anything about most of those. My backup plan is that my kid stays in day care preschool if he does not get in anywhere acceptable to me. Thanks for any thoughts or info! |

1. Go to myschooldc.org
2. There are hundreds of threads on PK3 on Capitol Hill and nearby 3. Always list your IB because that is your best bet. 4. Go back to myschooldc.org once you've done open houses and identified your list for any new information. 5. Rank in your true order of preference. |
If your number does not get you into Maury, it will not get you into SWS either. |
| You should also include Appletree Oklahoma Ave. It's just near RFK/Kingman Park. |

EdFest is a good resource for information about DC public schools:

1. Maury
2. Peabody 3. Appletree Lincoln Park 4. SWS 5. Miner 6.Center City PCS You get to put 12 on your list. |
I would put Maury lower than SWS. OP is IB for Maury and if she has a winning draw she can try SWS for the ECE (which is still the best part of their Reggio program) and move to Maury for 1st. |

You won't get into Peabody out of boundary. Maury will require a bit of luck to get into for PK3 but is not impossible (my son's best buddy got in this year with no sibling preference).
SWS is well regarded, but you'd need a very good lottery number to get in. If you're interested in SWS, I'd put that first on the list and Maury second. You might also look at Two Rivers, which has two campuses: 4th Street and Young. They might be pretty easy to access via public transit depending on your location. |
Maury is not early action, so is there still an inbounds preference? |
Yes. All DCPS schools with boundaries (so not CHML, SWS, Height, or Excel) give inbounds preference for PK. But only certain schools are early action schools, which guarantee that an inbounds student who lists the school among their PK lottery picks will either get in there or a school they ranked higher. If commute and continuity are important, I'd go with Maury first. Other rankings depend on whether you'd stay at any of the schools (like SWS) for K and above, or if you'd switch to Maury. |
Got it. So even with a preference, there's still no guarantee you'll be matched unless it's early action. |
|
Don't bother with Peabody; you won't get in.
I value commute a lot, so I'd put (1) SWS (2) Maury (3) AppleTree LP (4) Miner. Forget about the rest. |
| Maury will also have a beautiful brand new school building next year. |
SWS is probably a long-shot, too. I'd still list it, though. |
| IB Maury family here with a PreK kid who didn't get into Maury despite listing it as our #1 choice. We ended up at Miner and are very happy there. We turned down waitlist offers at both Appletree OK Avenue and Appletree Lincoln Park and are glad we did so. We love our child's teachers and overall experience and have met wonderful families as well. If commute is important I'd definitely prioritize that with the knowledge you'll be in Maury for K, and none of the schools you listed will deliver a "bad" PreK experience. Note that if you really want Maury then you still need to list it as your #1 choice. Otherwise there's no way you'll get in, even with IB preference. |
