| Op I totally agree with you. That us all. All other Christian denominations are watered down. |
| I'm thinking about it. Despite all its faults the Roman Catholic Church is still the largest charitable agency on earth - by far. |
| Welcome home OP. <3 I am a cradle Catholic and never thought about leaving the CC after the scandals. The Church is made of men, and there is sin and brokenness. But the CC is where I find hope for my life and for eternity and the loving presence of God in the Eucharist. We have to stay in the Church and do our best to make it better so that many more people will find Christ. We need to be light and bring people Faith, Hope and Love. |

I'm a former DC resident living in Appalachia which is virulently anti Catholic. As a journalist I'm constantly reminded that child abuse is common in all kinds of church communities. The Roman Catholics are the biggest and the wealthiest, so their abuses get grouped together and lawyers want to take cases because the Catholics have "deep pockets."
The local missionary or free will Baptists often have the same issues but no money, so it doesn't make international news. I have little doubt that the levels of abuse are similar among clergy who deal with lots of youth. The Catholics may have an edge because of sexual segregation, which breeds child abuse, whether its in wealthy British public schools or Afghani military units. |
I just do not see the Catholic Church making a concerted effort to change their culture of silrnce, control and abuse. When you have an organization that has repeatedly and systemically covered for abusers for decades it will take a fundamental reorgization of leadership and a lot of transparency and apologies to really earn trust. I just do not see that happening in the Catholic Church |
OP here. This is actually a really good point. I’m a lawyer and the deep pockets issue absolutely affects who is sued. |
| ^^^ to be clear, I’m talking about lawsuits in completely different contexts but the same principle applies |
| ^^^ And Iceland is still there for you, too! They don’t have a huge military-industrial complex that’s supporting corrupt regimes like Saudi Arabia! Buy your ticket and go live there! |
Sweden and Finland seem like more good options for pp. And there’s always neutral Switzerland! Or a tent and really warm gear in Antarctica. |
This logic is so ridiculous. But yeah, whatever you need to continue to support this. I've heard a lot of excuses for the church but this one is probably the oddest. Here's a thought - maybe instead of attacking people who care about kids, you should send rapists priests to Antartica. But I guess they are sacred and can do anything. SO g |
I’m not Catholic, but the Catholic Church does wonderful things for impoverished kids overseas. This is well known and you know it, too. The good works for kids overseas massively outweigh, in terms of numbers affected, the awful abuse. Why would you want to defund that? I’m sure your response will be, “take your tithes and give the money to charity” but that’s not how it works. Most who leave will join a different church. Also, you’re obviously a bigot. Also, you’re a broken record with your lame agenda to destroy the church by encouraging everybody to leave, when we all know your blatant bigotry is just making them dig in. That’s why we’re “attacking” you, because you “deserve” it for stupidity and bigotry. |
I’m pp and I’m not Catholic. But I do like the idea of bigots like you freezing your butts off in Antarctica. Seriously, though, when you cut your ties with this hate-mongering and racist presidency, by stopping your tax payments, we’ll all respect your (formerly one-note) outrage a little bit more. |
| Could any of those who are staying to bring about change within give us examples of exactly what you are doing to bring this change about? |
| Since when does bigotry = not tolerating child rape? |
Jeeze Louise, you HAVE to belong to a country you don't HAVE to belong to a church! Most people do not have the option of just picking the country they would like to be a citizen of. It isn't like joining a gym where you just pay your membership and you are in. It is a stupid an irrational argument. |
