Despite all this, I’m converting to Catholicism

Kids are most likely to be abused by a family member so hope you don’t leave your kids alone with any of them, either.

Religion/faith can add great richness and comfort to life. I could never pledge allegance to a religious organization which, from the top down, has an intentional, organized conspiracy to coverup sexual abuse of children, allowing the clergy to harm more children. This is not an issue of lone wolf abusers - it is a criminal conspiracy organized by the Vatican which allowed many children to be harmed. They knew it, and they allowed it. They are hypocrites, not practicing what they preach. Why would you financially support this behavior? Find another Christian religion which follows it’s own beliefs.

Except we wouldn't cover it up. See the difference.

I don’t believe it is only possible to understand what you’ve experienced. Indeed, some of my best parenting advice has come from non-parents who can see objectively while some of the worst has come from other parents whose perceptions are based on their own experiences, not mine.

I wouldn’t mind the celibacy requirement being lifted for parish priests. There are already some married priests in the Church —Anglican converts and Maronites. My daughter was friends with the only daughter of a married priest.

That said, I watched a friend’s Episcopal parish get slogged down for two years by her priest’s divorce and another friend’s shul get torn apart by her rabbi’s affair and divorce. I can recall some divorces among pastors in friends’ Baptist and non-denominational churches that were distruptive as well. In these cases, the congregations were effectively spiritually leaderless during the divorces.

Imagine if this occurred higher in the leadership. So maybe only priests, but not Bishops or higher.

That already isn’t allowed in this Archdioecese. Why don’t you know that?

Oh please. News flash: when victims of abuse by the clergy told their families, the families went to the church rather than the cops. So maybe you should reassess whether families member will cover things up.

I’m familiar with that site. What’s your point? Many many families did not report the abuse to the police.

Unfortunately, the Eastern churches have their own problems. Go to https://www.pokrov.org.

You just don't hear as much about the smaller organizations where this sort of thing has happened. Sadly, in previous decades, this happened in many situations and people just didn't speak about it.

Many did and the church compromised the investigation, read about Fr. Orr and how Prep in 2003 destroyed the investigation and how in 2009 they almost destroyed the investigation.

Good luck, OP. I am a convert, too, and I haven't been able to bring myself to go to mass since the latest news broke or to feel any connection to the church at all.

In any type of mosque, synagogue, church, whatever, there are going to be incidents of abuse. It is an unfortunate fact of life that people who victimize children exist and gravitate to organizations where they have access to them. What is falling about the Catholic Church is that for decades the safety of children appears to have been the lowest priority.

Are you fully comfortable with denomination in which women are second-class citizens? Or does that give you pause?
